psa and...
Went for a medical recently and recommended when over 50 to have a psa test. My psa went from 3.9 to 5.3 in six months. Doctor was concerned and had it done again and was back to 3.9. There is no requirement on the bloodwork requisition to abstain from sex. This could have caused the psa to jump. The most recent psa bloodword said no ejaculation within 48 hours of the psa test. Hence better results. So when your partner asks you if you are ready for sex, you can have another excuse, sorry honey I have bloodwork to be done tomorrow.:D:)

Get it checked asap! My buddy had numbers similar to yours and had prostrate cancer at age 45. It was removed and chemo followed.

Relationship b/w PSA, prostate cancer, prostate biopsies, prostatectomy (robot vs. traditional) has all become quite controversial lately. Be sure to do your homework and find a urologist that will work through all of it with you.

I think he's only saying, "don't pump the professor" for a few days before your PSA test.

I have to add to this..

You were wrong.

I had my annual physical (with dreaded rectal exam) a few months ago. My doc has been a great friend for about 20 years.
As I was leaving, his nurse grabbed me and said, "Not so fast! We need to do some blood work. Can we check your PSA? When did you last have sex?" I said,"Five minutes ago. With Dr. Smith." |
|
Interesting.
When ever I have had a PSA the nurse never has asked "when did you have sex last" nor have I been told not to have sex 48 hours before. I'm about to have blood drawn right now; I'm gonna ask them about this and see what they say. |
The first requisition for blood tests....
ie . the battery of tests on my sheet, says no eating drinking within so many hours before the test. No mention of sex or ejaculation or whatever. If your psa is up and u see a specialist , then subsequent psa test may prohibit ejaculation within 48 hours of the test. If you research the internet it generally states that ejaculation may compromise psa results. I would think that it depends on the specialist doctor. Any doctors out there agree or disagree?

From the Harvard Health Publications site:
"How do I prepare for the test? There is no special preparation for this test, but to avoid having an artificially high test level you should not have sexual intercourse for a day before your test. Tell your doctor if you are taking any medicines, especially medicines for the prostate, since these may affect the way the doctor interprets the results of your test." I just had blood drawn this morning for my PSA... and the wife and I... you know... did it an hour before. I'll bring it to my doctors attention if my level is high. |
So what your saying is my level should be zero??
