diesel shops around Atlanta ?
Hello I have a 2001 GMC Duramax that I recently purchased. All is well but I'm in the learning stage as this is my first diesel. I would like to find a good diesel mechanic/shop to get a baseline inspection done. I'm located in Marietta and there are the normal mix of Goodyear , Firestone , NAPA service centers but not sure that's what I want. I generally do all the normal maint. myself like oil and filters, brakes, shocks etc. but need some help understanding any of the unique diesel maint. items. Any recommendations ?

I'm guessing you want an indy?...
Try a truck stop and ask the mechanics there if they know of a diesel tech that works on the light and medium duty trucks if not.. Some dealers have diesel techs, not all... |

My BIL is a diesel mechanic and this is what he recommends for your situation. Ask other owners of GMC diesel trucks as well. |

The good news is that all you should do w/ that truck is regular scheduled maintanance, making sure to use the correct, recommended lubricants and filters. Follow a strict maintanance schedule and whatever you do, don't ever go cheap on any filters, either oil/air or fuel.

Definetly change the fuel filter every 25,000 km. If you are a so inclined, install an aftermarket fuel filter with better micron filtration. The older Duramax injectors are prone to failure because of inadequate filtration and moisture getting into the injector. These injectors run at over 25,000 psi so the dirt and moisture pit the relief ball and cause internal leaks.

@ Boosted: good advice. The only mods I like on those trucks are things like bypass filtration systems and other longevity aids. Plus maybe cup holders and mudflaps w/ chrome rocker girls, etc...

Yes def mud flaps with the girlies. I thought they all had cup holders,or is that only with centre seat console.
I change those style injectors at work usually once or twice a month. Quote:

I went on the Duramax forum and did a search for "oil" good god they are all over the board just like here :D After reading about 30 pages I had to stop.

I have an 07 that I use for towing. It's got 150k on it not one broken part yet. I change the oil every 5k fuel filter every 10k trans fluid 30k. I've used Mobil 1 fluids and GM filters. I found a local dealer with a good tech and took it there at 100k to have them check everything. He suggested that the water pump sometimes fails at 125k so I had that and the drive belt and rollers. Talk to the local dealers to see if they have a good long time tech

Hey Dan, which Mobil 1 product? Do they make a diesel-specific oil? I know about their Delvac but that's not synthetic.

I use the Mobil 1 5 40 and Dextron V1. Are they the best? Don't know but they work well for me
I have put Brad Penn in the bed to haul it to the shop |
Mobil 1 is available in 15W40 specifically for diesels. Available in 5 qt jugs at WalMart for under $25

I went on the Mobil oil website and they recommend the 5W40 TDT oil for my application.
