INDY 500 pace car

A bit of trivia last nigh on Barrett-Jackson auction I did not know.....The only non US auto to ever pace the 500 was a 914 Porsche. Wow!!! Don't remember the year.

It would be my guess to be somewhere in the early '70's.

914

I'm getting up there....have followed Indy....but I don't ever recall anything but American to pace the 500

A 914 could have paced one of the races at the old Ontario Speedway in the 1970's

The Barret-Jackson talkin heads are known for slips in historical facts.

Remember the $218K 23 window Samba?

Google brings up results for a 914 in 1971, but the links are dead. Other websites show a Dodge Challenger convertible that paced the race, crashing and injuring about 20 people because somebody removed a cone being used by the driver as a braking marker.

Do you think they meant a 914 'race' car someone once toured the track along with a famous whatever and so its worth $Xtra glossy eyes under the big top?? As Bob Varsha might quote: Oh yeah, don't forget the ever important matching numbers and commemorative plaque.

Speaking of pace cars, on the New Years presentation, they couldn't give away an original perfect extreme low mileage (probably new) 1978 Corvette Pace car. High bid was $38k.

Wow, 38K sounds like a TON of money for a '78 Corvette to me. Pretty much any original (even good shape, low miles) Corvette from '74-81 is worth a tops of $5k-10k in my book.

Oh, you saw that on Barrett-Jackson, I'm sorry, I thought you saw that on a repatible site. Barrett_Jackson would sell their mother if it meant money.

Is that the 914 that Hurley Haywood drove to victory in the Daytona 500?

Barrett-Jackson was correct, but they didn't say the Indy race - They said DAYTONA.

That's correct, and they were correct.

1971:

Notable because it was the only non-American Daytona 500 pace car until this year, when a Camry will pace the race.
