Mexican Country Music

Is driving me insane...

crustychief 01-25-2012 01:16 PM

Something about the weird beat, mixed with a tuba playing 1/8th notes, blasting out of a crappy stereo in a 72 Chevy pickup with 4 dudes in it is kind of comical.

Banda tubas....you can blame the Germans....

that's more of a putt than a drive isn't it ? :D:D

You are claiming that you were not already insane?

How about getting yourself a T-shirt that says "Tejano Power" on it?

I actually dig "banda" style. Goes back to the heritage of military bands in Mexico long ago. The wide unison vibrato, the alto horns doing the typical "peck horn" upbeats, the tuba gymnastics....I guess you have to be a brass player to appreciate what they're doing. The clarinets in clarino and altissimo range, actually quite demanding yet so corny sounding. Part of the charm.

(But then again, you're listening to an old band director who taught for decades):D

Much different in playing banda vs. waltzes. Some of these guys have the chops on tuba that Arturo Sandoval has on trumpet. Saw one guy wailing on a 5-valve Mirafone rotary F tuba that made me think "Harvey Phillips could probably not play this";)

I meant the German immigrants to Mexico, Central and South America. They brought the oompah along with them. Segue to Banda....

nota 01-25-2012 01:26 PM

suck far worse then american country

sound's like they are molesting a cat while crying

azasadny 01-25-2012 01:27 PM

It's an acquired taste and I can only stand so much of it before it irritates the beejeezus out of me, just like reggae, cajun, and ska.

red-beard 01-25-2012 01:29 PM

It is more of the accordian stuff...

My wife is from Mexico and she can't stand it either. Now Flamenco (really toque), as long as there is no signing or tap dancing, I can listen to all day long.

Indeed.

I did play trumpet and baritone in high school. It just sounds ridiculous to me in the setting I mentioned.

red-beard 01-25-2012 01:36 PM

I refuse to correct my speeling errors
