The new 911 or 991

In New Orleans the new 911 will be revealed on Thursday the 4th, then the next Thursday in Baton Rouge at the Porsche dealer. In Baton Rouge they already have 2 that are in the back under lock and key. The car can be represented by 90-16-14. 90% new parts, 16% better fuel economy and 14 seconds faster than the 997 around Nuremberg. Car is larger on the inside and takes styling cues from the Panamera. Very sharp looking.

14 seconds? I've never been there, but that sounds like a lot.

Nurburgring. Not Nuremburg. Huge difference.

One hosts time trials. The other.... a different kind.

Nurburgring....

I really like my 996(s), so I'm not biased against the newer models. But I wonder, how many times can they make the 911 bigger and more comfortable without losing the character that makes it special? More tech, electric power steering, etc seems contrary to the fundamental goal. Most reviews I've read report that it is in fact a more isolated car, Evo found that a new Carrera S had similar performance to a 997 GT3 but found the GT3 to be more fun. Where is the tipping point between performance and pure fun?

Of course, many say the same about the 996. In 10 years when they're cheap I'll give the 991 a shot. :)

The Ring is a lot
it's 20km long.. 154 turns.
or 25km , 170 turns if they included the current GP track (probably not)

So, who here can't wait to buy one?

speeder 01-31-2012 09:53 AM

New Porsches have never been aimed at the likes of who hangs out here. Just sayin'...

I like it, but also like my smaller 964. My wife sez I could buy one if I didn't mind living in it alone. :D

Of the 4 Porsches I owned, only the last one was bought used...curious..what's the weight on the latest offering?

Jim Richards 01-31-2012 10:22 AM

You should be able to find the specs online.

Too lazy to do so...thought one of the loyalists would have all the specs memorized by now. ;)

Jim Richards 01-31-2012 10:25 AM

OK. I'm too lazy to offer to do your homework for you. :p

Over 100 pounds lighter than the outgoing 997

There's a whole lotta aluminum in the new 991

I think it could be argued that the trials at nuremburg are about time...... How much time you have left....

There's an event here in L.A. on the 4th for one of the local dealers.

For 116k, I just dont know.

Wonder what the electro mechanical steering is like??? Perhaps 997s are more fun in that regard.

ah heck I like my 86.

rouxroux 01-31-2012 01:37 PM

Looks like a luxo-boat to me. Not sold on the "auto shut off" or "coasting" feature. Has all the correct styling cues for the fan-boys however.

Found it here, but didn't see a weight: 2012-2013 Porsche 911/991 - Top Speed

There's one floating around Houston already, I know a guy who knows a guy who took it for a photo shoot this past weekend...
