Both the above are similar to: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connections_(TV_series) which weaves history and fun together.
They just kind of subtly slip a whole bunch of learning into all that entertainment. I hated school but liked these.

For American-only history:

(I haven't read but the tv series was unique but dumbed-down for the USA crowd)

Okinawa WW2 from two different perspectives:

I've been on a bit of a history binge lately. My last four books.
Undaunted Courage: Meriwether Lewis, Thomas Jefferson and the Opening of the American West
Crazy Horse and Custer: The Parallel Lives of Two American Warriors
The Rising Tide: A Novel of World War II
The Steel Wave: A Novel of World War II

A Land Remembered by Patrick Smith. Just an outstanding book.

This sounded like the kind of book I like, historical novels that you can learn from. I'm trying to read it now, but good grief - the dialog is just painful to read and the characters are caricatures.
BTW, what are all the possible definitions of the word "hammock?" I cannot find one where his use of the word makes sense.

I ordered as well...the print version since I am stubborn.

A bit off track, I am re-reading 'O Pioneers' and 'My Antonia' by Willa Cather.

I read a retrospective review on 'My Antonia' and, as luck and my wife would have it, we have both tomes.

'My Antonia' is about music, which I missed the first time through in in HS. Trust me, it is better the second time.

Wow, thanks so much. You made my day. It's so hard to sell a book on Amazon. It's like selling a needle in a hay stack. Not only can the customers not find it, they don't even know it's there. My hope is that word of mouth will give it traction and the rest will be history. I'd love to see it as a movie. Like the Martian. Like me, the author couldn't sign an agent or publisher so he self-published it on Amazon.

Thank you as well. Let's see some more good reviews! Maybe PPOT can be the vehicle (sorry) that launches my new career as an author. Really. There are a lot of you guys and gals out there. Word of mouth is so important. I sold a bunch of copies in Ann Arbor Michigan because of my wife's cousin. But not enough people write reviews.

BTW, there's a bit of Porsche content in the book, of course.

I read your review. It's great. Thank you. I don't know where else to write reviews. Amazon is the only site where the book is sold.

For those of you interested in the US Southwest, this is a great book.

https://www.amazon.com/Blood-Thunder-Carson-Conquest-American/dp/1400031109/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3G1LOJFAA883T&keywords=blood+and+t hunder+by+hampton+sides&qid=1560353704&s=gateway&s prefix=blood+and+Thun%2Caps%2C205&sr=8-1

starts before the Mexican War and takes place throughout the transition to US control. Oh and Kit Carson, the central character, is shown to have made 5 trips from Taos/Santa Fe to LA in the mid 1850's. Can you picture the terrain? That was one tough guy

Anything by Hampton Sides.
His level of research is over the top.

Kingdom of the Ice (USS Jeanette)
Hellbound on His Trail (James Earl Ray)
Ghost Soldiers (Bataan death march rescue)

Agreed, the two Rothfuss books are excellent. They are loooong, but I couldn't put them down.

A Game of Thrones
A Clash of Kings
A Storm of Swords
A Feast for Crows
A Dance with Dragons

Now being made into a TV series. Read the before watching it!!!!

I'll have to check them out.

I like stuff written by Michael Moorcock. He's got a bunch of trilogies and series, and they are almost all interconnected, but can be read separately.

I used to enjoy the Xanth novels from Piers Anthony. I think the earlier books were better than the later books.

Another excellent fantasy book is "The Crystal Cave" by Mary Stewart.
https://www.amazon.com/Crystal-Cave-Arthurian-Saga-Book/dp/0060548258/

It's the first of a Merlin trilogy written from the point of view of Merlin. And per wikipedia, there are five books from her that are part of the Arthurian legend. It's been years since I read them, but I think the others are good, but not as good as the first.

Also, I really enjoyed "Shogun" by James Clavell which is another LOOOOONG book.
