Fingerprint powder
Does anyone know the best way to remove fingerprint powder from painted walls and door frames?
It's a long story with lots of stuff you don't want to see. Rental unit and renter got himself dead (with help). Law enforcement powdered everything. Family of dead guy doesn't want his stuff or to help clean up. Thinking of getting a dumpster and then starting the clean up and painting. Thanks in advance for ideas. schamp

interesting problem, i would think this fingerprinting dust is a lot like baking flower.
fine powder, sticks to anything ... And i imagine that water would just make it clot and even more stickier?

I used Lacquer thinner on fingerprint powder that was all over a 24' enclosed trailer that was almost totally black with powder. It took a while to get it off but that was the best chemical that worked for the powder.
You might try goof-off too. Dave |

It depends on what type of powder it is. Vacume any loose dust first. Then try warm water and dish detergent on a small area. It's what the local LEO recomended when my motorhome was broke into. But there are different types of powder used. Call the Ident unit that did the work and ask them what to use.

Had to clean up after the fingerprint squad at my house recently. My "incident" happened more than a month ago, and I still discover surfaces with dust every now and then.
Best results came through patience. First use a sponge, warm water and dishwashing liquid to wet the area. Let it stand for a few moments. Now have two buckets ready, one with diswashing liquid/water, the other with clean water. Dip the sponge into the soap mixture, rub vigourously, and rinse out in the bucket of water. Wring out sponge and repeat. Finally take a damp microfibre cloth and use that to remove the last remnants of the powder.

Thanks for the ideas guys. I will try them all. Along with acetone. There is so much blood on the floor in the kitchen we are just going to remove the floorcovering and redo. Blood on the walls and hardwood floors is another story. The fingerprint powder is just about everywhere. Walls and doors, doorframes, bathroom, bedroom. The story here is two guys got into a knife fight (maybe a lovefight) and one ends up dead. The other guy, who has been caught, is claiming self defence.
Rental unit is next to a nice park in a nice area. Unit has been in the family about 60 years. Thanks for the ideas. schamp

Fingerprint powder used to be made of fine graphite powder (i.e. pencil lead). Don't know what they are using these days. Dish soap and water seems like the best best. Be prepared to do plenty of rinsing of your sponge/rag.
