$65 Tires

Each...

For my bicycle. WTH?!?

Flieger 04-03-2012 05:36 PM

Ouch! They had better last a long time and be really grippy.

You ever watch chainlove.com? They have bike stuff at great prices.

Jim Bremner 04-03-2012 06:05 PM

Let's see, They're made from OIL, That's gone up
They're made from Rubber, That's gone up
They're bought with US dollars, That's gone Down.
They're made in a far away land so they need to be shipped, That's gone up

Yup $65 Get used to it.

Conti's?

red-beard 04-03-2012 06:29 PM

They last a year and are very puncture resistant. I usually put 4-5K miles on a set.

They don't sell these.

Specialized Armadillo Elite. Much better than Conti Gatorskins

enzo1 04-03-2012 06:37 PM

I bought a Michelin Pro 4 endurance.... 51 +4.95 shipping. WAS gonna ride today but weather got in the way

herr_oberst 04-03-2012 06:38 PM

Have you ever considered Schwalbe Marathons? Great reviews if high mileage puncture resistance is your goal. Pretty heavy, but for a commuter tire...

SAEs are 280 grams each. Not as light as race tires, but a good compromise.

Racerbvd 04-03-2012 06:42 PM

Look up the price of NOS Red-Line tires for an early Schwinn
Back in the 80s, I remember some Continental tires with Egyptian Cotton, sew ups that cost $180 each, and non patchable:eek:

Schwalbe City/Touring Tires Cycling Products - BikeTiresDirect

The closest equal is Durano Plus HS 399. They are 340 grams AND $69.35

I learned the hard way to just suck it up and skip the cheap tires. Cheap tires suck.

Porsche-O-Phile 04-04-2012 09:10 AM

Agree with the above. I use Contis, which aren't cheap. Have heard good things about the armadillos, but $65?!?! JHC!

Even tubes have gone up. Grr.

Cheap tires on a car is bad enough. Cheap tires on a road bike? Fuggeddaboutit. You're asking for road rash or broken bones.

red-beard 04-04-2012 11:15 AM

I'm just *****ing. Even for really good tires, this seems like a lot. I have a couple of years supply of tubes...I picked a cheap deal for 40 Bontrager tubes.

I was considering the heavier regular Armadillos, since they are only $45. They weigh 95grams more each. I have one set of wheels with 700cx28 with the regulars for the downtown roads.

I've been using the WTB Thick Slicks, heavy yes, but they are wearing well 500ish miles so far and no flats :)

What happened to the tub tires with silk casing. Silk casings tubs ride so nice and quick. Back then they were 40-50 bucks a piece. the next level were the Egyptian cottons. thread count were important.

David 04-05-2012 05:47 AM

I bought one the other day for $65 too and thought about how I b!tch about a $400 car tire that's 50 times bigger than a bike tire.

At least I've convinced myself that carbon rim and hub wheels are not worth it :D
