Cystoscopy.......?

I am slated for one of these in May. Has anybody out there had one? They tell me I will get a local anaesthetic. That may not be enough as I will likely supplement it by chewing on my leather belt. I know they will be looking at my enlarged prostate. Do any med. profs. know how long this takes? And is it possible that while they are in there(like a colonoscopy) they could shave off some of the prostate(as in turps procedure)? Is a catheter likely after the procedure? Any viewpoints would be appreciated. Pics not needed thanks of how they do it LOL:eek:

I've had more of those than I can count. It's an outpatient procedure, takes less than an hour total.... 15 minutes for the local anesthetic to work, 15 minutes for the procedure, and then you clean up (clean off the lube, maybe take a pee, and get dressed). The procedure itself is rather uncomfortable, but not painful. It's easy to talk with the urologist during the procedure. When he's done, I ask him to mail me a copy of the report, so I can read it at my leisure and know all the technical info. I always take the day off work, as there may be some minor bleeding afterwards, and it's a good idea to take it easy during that time.

As far as cutting the prostate, and leaving a catheter in place for a few days... isn't that done under general anesthesia in a hospital, with an overnight stay?

If they do a TURP, they will probably leave the catheter in, may keep you until they pull the cath, but have heard of people going home with them.

Don't take any aspirin or other anti inflammatories for a week ahead of time, use tylenol instead if you must.

A cystoscopy done in the office will be done with lubricating local anesthetic gel. If you need a polyp removed, bleeding source biopsied, prostate work, stent placed, stone retrieved you get to have a regional or general anesthetic in a hospital or surgery center. Spinal anesthetic is usually used for prostate resection, general for the others because you can go home afterwards.
