DVD to iPad Video Conversion?

Any suggestions as to a good program? I've tried ripping DVDs through a free program as well as VLC, both simply lock up. My kids have a large number of purchased DVDs that I'd like to convert to .mp4 for watching on our iPad while in the car.

Windows or Mac? (which one are you doing the ripping on?)

Few ways to do this.

If you have the DVD's ripped already in any format (Divx, Avi etc), you can actually play them on your iPad with CinexPlayer. This does not require an .mp4 video file

(CineXPlayer)

If you want to use the native movie player app on the iPad then Handbrake (HandBrake) is a good converter to .mp4.

Windows 7 PC.

I found a ripper that seems to work (FormatFactory) but I still need a 3rd party video player on the ipad, I'm trying Playable just because it is free. I'll download CineXPlayer and give it a shot.

CineXPlayer seems to have done the trick, thanks David.

I use Handbrake to convert the file and then drag the file into iTunes. You can then sync with your iPad. Lots of web sites out there to discuss this.

Handbrake.

Handbrake to rip and Plex to watch, we watch movies on iPad iPhone when away. Works well even over 3G

I use one called DVDFab on Windows. It works well except I can't get it to convert certain discs which I think may be due to copy protection, although it's converted 98% of discs I have tried.

Media Max 123 and removes c.p., pre-clips and other nuisence warnings.

FormatFactory seems to have decided to lock up all the time, I need to download Handbrake. This process isn't hard, but it's a challenge to find software that actually works.

I broke down and purchased Aiseesoft DVD to iPhone Suite. It is very easy to use and it works great. I own several DVDs that I want to keep on my phone. It also does a great conversion from virtually any format to iPhone. It has easy to use settings to make a final file that is optimized to your device.

I have a copy of Le Mans, Rendezvous, Blazing Saddles and some others on my iPhone. And yes, I own the original DVDs.
