WTH? Is it really so epidemic? Or is it just enhanced awareness? Today I read of a Clifton NJ high school teacher accused of having sex with a 16 year old. Seriously WTF?

Every year in HS there was "rumor" about a teacher and student.

I recall at least 2 teachers who married their "alleged" partners after graduation.

remember - it's only bad if it is a male teacher and a female student. If it is a female teacher and male student it's "hot" - desirable even.

I suppose it depends on the kid - some are "older" than others. Then again, sexual predators come in many different flavors. Frankly a 30 year old woman who wants to bang a 17 year old likely has some serious issues. I personally would prefer my son not get caught up in them. ymmv.

I agree. But we can only rationally take sexual equality so far until we start to look silly. When a 30 year old male teacher is banging a 17 year old female student it's a different situation. It just is.

Well, most would argue that girls mature more quickly than boys. So if your 17 year old boy is fine to bang a 30 year old teacher (or other authority figure) then a 17 year old girl should be even more ok, right?

If a 30 year old female teacher was having sex with my son in high school, I'd have her fired and prosecuted. It is wrong.

Not really picking on you, but you do bring up a point.


While I am in the crowd of: "Hey! Why didn't that happen to me with a hot female teacher!", I also get why it is inappropriate, even with consent. The teacher is an authority figure, one that should know better and as a teacher is there to impart knowledge to the student - book knowledge. Even at 17, kids are impressionable and also susceptible to psychological harm. It's the same with doctor/patient relationships and other fields and by then we are not talking about "kids" anymore.

It's an abuse of power.

I think this sort of thing has been going on for centuries. It was just easier to keep it a secret in the old days compared to now when there is so much hype/pressure/hysteria about it. It's not the only place it has happened. I heard about priests (not trying to PARF this) in past years/centuries introducing soon to become brides to the facts of life. I also heard a lot of births happened 9 months after. I don't think it's right, but I guess some of those with the power don't look at it that way.

It's the Internet that is the cause. Before, if this happened in a place like L.A. and the news picked up on it, other large news sources would pick it up. Same thing happens in a small town, it may never be seen out of that area. With everyone no connected, news stories can be picked up from towns that may have been looked over before.
