there is nothing worse than sucking up to a boss.

nothing.

i work for government. (insert joke here)

so i have several levels of supervisors. my 1st line, decided he really needed to see Amsterdam, dropped everything, left me in charge..he's outta here!! he gives me his "to-do" list, and leaves. buhbye.

his boss calls me tuesday. he is bringing 20 of his equals to my job.."didnt my boss tell me? NO!" they will be here thurs..have all the safety gear ready..get some vans..yada yada yada.. i get it all arranged..and i get an email.."tour moved to friday".

everyone already has approved time off!! nobody is here! crap..i was going to take friday off!!

oh well, sucking up to the bosses..i've heard it is much more rewarding if i wear a nice shirt. it is going to be a looooonnnnng friday.

the entire group is going to another project..across the bay area..bossman has not even considered how we are getting the vans over there..all 20 visitors has their own cars. awesome.

my job is thankless..no Christmas bonus, no raises..we just "make it happen"

horray!

It's as if the computer monitor is a mirror

We have a guy here at work (Alex) who is a certified professional a$$kisser. I always say that every time I go to kiss our boss's a$$ I end up kissing the back of Alex's head.

I realized early on in my life that I was not good at sucking up. It probably hindered my advancement at jobs early on in life, even though I was a worker. I did not really understand how it all worked until it was too late, and I was the boss. Still have to "make it happen " every day though.
Good luck Vash.

I don't suck up to the boss, but I do my job in such a way that the boss knows how valuable I am, and knows that without me he would only be half as awesome as people think he is.

That's what I tell myself every day.

vash 06-21-2012 02:37 PM

i'm gonna do everything this guy asks of me.

his piss poor planning WILL be an emergency on my end. whatever.

i'll go down on one knee and smooch his ass..dont watch.

Yeah, I work for the guberment too....

Ain't it grand how everyone thinks you are getting rich (@ $20 and hr) with no raises or bonuses. All the while being scrutinized and micro managed!

Rick Lee 06-21-2012 02:51 PM

That's why I like being in sales. You're only as good as your last month, and if you're pretty good, the boss kisses your ass.

aigel 06-21-2012 03:02 PM

There are no Christmas bonuses and no raises in private industry too. And the job is on the line all the time as welll, so don't complain too much there Vash. This situation sounds entertaining to me actually! Take it with some humor and make the best of it! :D

"There are no Christmas bonuses and no raises in private industry"

It's even worse for the self-employed, no overtime pay just for starters. I'd have quit a long time ago if it weren't for being able to take cash out of the till.

I'm lost on this one - how is this sucking up to the boss? Sounds like you're just dealing with an unpleasant situation with little preparation - aka working.

wcc 06-21-2012 06:05 PM

Yes there is something worse.. Sucking up to a BAD, clueless, useless boss.

pegasus9 06-21-2012 06:55 PM

Sychophants. Can't stand them.

porsche930dude 06-21-2012 07:04 PM

Well this makes me feel a little better about my boss I suppose. I nag ***** and moan and basicly just call him a stupid idiot all day and point out all his mistakes. It doesnt seem to make him any better at his job but I gotta try. And as his only steady employee thats any good I cant seem to get him to fire me. theyll be no ass kissing from me thats for sure. I give it to him quick and dirty. If he dont want it he dont have to take it!

Baz 06-21-2012 07:54 PM

Never had a government job but I have paid my dues working for "others".

Making them "look good" is part of it but also accumulating knowledge and experience to parlay into my future employment endeavours.

I've always had an aversion to authority and working for someone else only made it worse....now self-employed and captain of my own ship. Sure - you don't get a traditional paycheck but it doesn't matter - there's so much more upside in not sucking up to a nitwit with seniority essentially you almost can't place a value on it!

Tallyho Cliff.... :p

OTH, my very recent boss was a total brown nose. He expected me to reciprocate. I didn't. Things were a little tense. He had ethical issues. He is gone. YAY. I win!

Thanks Fred. Everything in life is a trade off. I'm sure - like me and many other business owners - you work your butt off - long hours - constant decision making - always trying to think outside the box - juggling cash flow - the list goes on and on - but at least we are doing for ourselves and not some twit!

Not everyone has a twit for a boss - I get that. I've had some great ones but also my share of incompetent dorks....

onewhippedpuppy 06-22-2012 10:17 AM

If you're good enough at your job no ass kissing is necessary.:)
