RIP Phylliss Diller
Always liked her, especially in the Bob Hope movies they did together.

Her Wikipedia entry is great reading! Hilarious stuff.
Like Speeder once said, these folks passing is like watching our lives go by. _ |

They say that x minutes of laughing adds y minutes to you life. (I forget the real numbers) That explains her longevity.

RIP, Phyllis.

95, a pretty good run. RIP
How long has it been since she has been in the limelight? 20 years? |
She was maintaining a regular standup schedule and making appearances on television, until she had a heart attack in 1999 and had a pacemaker installed. After that, she stopped doing regular standup and stayed closer to home. She was on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno last summer, and she performed her standup routine and then talked with Jay and did the regular guest appearance thing. Also late last year she made a cameo appearance as a character on Roseanne's new show. But other than that she was probably relaxing and letting her eldest son Perry handle the business end of things.

She was one of the first females I knew who could joke like a man- and do it in such a way for 60's network morality. She was also accepted as an equal among the male macho (rat pack) guys. One hell of a lady.

I thought this was one of the more interesting things about her, taken from the NY Times article.........
"....In her many television appearances she would typically sashay onstage wearing stiff, outsize, hideous metallic dresses (she did this, she said, so she could lie to her audiences about the state of her body, which was really trim and shapely)." "...Ms. Diller was never really the grotesque-looking woman she made herself out to be; her body, in fact, was attractive enough that when she posed nude for a Playboy photo spread the pictures ended up not being published — the magazine was going for laughs, and decided that they looked too good to be funny." |
