My Friend Passed Away Today
Today at 12:45 PM I got a call from my friend with Cancer step daughter that they were going to move her to the Hospice at 1:30 PM as she had continued to decline . So I got dressed, knew that it would be several hours before my friend would be made comfortable so I headed off for a bite of lunch before I went off to visit.
I got there at 3:20, signed in and was shown to my friends room where she was sedated, hooked up to the O2 and was struggling for breath. I sat down held her hand told her I loved her, knew that she loved me, that she was a brave person to suffer through this time and she should do what she needed to do and that I understood. She just slowly started to stop breathing and in less than 5 minutes she was gone. It really was just so peaceful, the hard part is getting up to the line between life and death. I got up went to the desk told them that my friend had passed, asked them to call the step daughter to notify her and asked to talk to her for a moment. Which I did. I talked to the Priest for a moment or two and told him about how my parents had passed and that love and kindness are the only enduring qualities in this life that mean anything. By about 4:30 PM I was home again. It all seems just so matter of fact to me, I just did what needed to be done and that was hold her hand without any fuss or muss. Now tomorrow I many just fall apart into a quivering mass of inconsolable jelly?

Tabs, you did what you knew she needed and that was to hold her hand. And believe me, she knew it. She knew it was you. That's why it was peaceful. Because she knew you were there. Why do you think that it was at that very moment she took her last breath? Because it was with you. You did it exactly right. And in your heart you know that. And if tomorrow you fall apart into a mass of jelly, that's ok. You did what you needed to do for her. Now it's ok to do what you need to do for you.
You sound like a lovely man. No wonder she picked you to be the one to hold her hand at that moment. |
