Copper floor

I had a bar top that I did this to.....

The price, including the cost of the pennies would probably range from $2.50 to $3.50 a square foot.

Something different...

flatbutt 08-24-2012 10:48 AM

That's cool. Mayne trekkor could help with the grout question.

id10t 08-24-2012 10:59 AM

I would imagine that it would be a royal pain to clean

PorscheGAL 08-24-2012 11:40 AM

If there is a run on the banks you just have to pull up the floor.

motion 08-24-2012 11:43 AM

I'll bet those are popular in China right now, except with US quarters.

Canada is getting rid of their pennies.

herr_oberst 08-24-2012 12:12 PM

Now, do an illustration in the floor using the darker and lighter pennies for the shadows and highlights; that would be impressive.

Ah, hell, that's pretty cool just the way it is.

It would probably be a total pain, but if the copper could be exposed instead of encased in goo, I would think it would have plenty of grip because of all the edges, plus, it would exhibit wear patterns after a while.

Probably illegal:

18 USC 333 indicates alteration with “intent to render [currency] unfit to be reissued” is punishable by up to six months in prison.

kill joy

Not necessarily unaltered, only encased.
Just like being locked in a vault.
The coins could hypothetically be removed, cleaned, and returned to service.

The Hotel Congress, in Tucson, has a cafe with this flooring.

Pennies are now mostly zinc with a very thin copper coating - good luck getting the floor sealer/epoxy/grout off without also stripping off the copper coating. Maybe with liquid nitrogen and very gentle media blasting. Would be rather expensive if the Treasury Dept. made one do this.

john70t 08-24-2012 02:28 PM

Just talking legalese hypotheticals....in case someone had their entire life ruined for $20 worth of artwork ;)
You are spot on though. Thx.

Bill Douglas 08-24-2012 02:40 PM

Actually... If you wait long enough it will be cost effective to cover the floor in US dollars ;)

I think that floor looks great! and fun :)

U.S. Title 18, Chapter 17, Section 331: Prohibits among other things, fraudulent alteration and mutilation of coins. This statue does not, however, prohibit the mutilation of coins if done without fraudulent intent if the mutilated coins are not used fraudulently.

matt f 08-24-2012 04:53 PM

:)Looks great. No mutilation or alteration. Just preserved.

porsche4life 08-24-2012 04:55 PM
