Monitor, Cable or Video on Motherboard?
 

I can't get a screen image from a computer I bought a few weeks ago...

I thought the intermittent problem was the very cheap HDMI cable I bought from Amazon to replace the too short cable I was using (and that one seemed to work fine), but...

when I put the short cable on I can't get anything on the screen (except from the monitor itself - e.g. "monitor going to sleep")

I also have the problem of trying to figure out is the computer is on or in what status - e.g. Windows makes a tone when it boots up, or does it also make the same tone when it shuts down?

I can run a VGA cable from the laptop to the screen but do not have extra screens or extra HDMI or DVI computers to try.

Asus computer, 2 HDMI cables, hp LCD screen that is about 1.5 years old

(the sh^&*t never stops with my computer problems)

- any ideas on how I can troubleshoot things? I'd prefer to not have to return the Asus to the local store as I spent a lot of time setting it up, including putting an old HDD drive from my last computer (which died) into the Asus.

So the screen work with the laptop but not with the desktop? You could drop a video card from another computer into the desktop to see if it is still alive. You can probably get a PCI (not PCIe) pretty cheap on CL if you have any PCI slots in the new one. The local store where you bought it might have a card to fit as well in PCI or PCIe.

Is the HDMI out on the motherboard or a video card?

Does the LCD screen have a "input select"? It might be set to VGA and not HDMI.

the Asus motherboard has the HDMI video output

the screen worked a day or 2 ago with the laptop which is VGA only. I can try it again I guess.
- if it works on VGA then does that imply it surely works on HDMI? I dunno what electronics are in the screen itself...


BTW - I figure if the asus is so badly built that the video driver goes out, I do not want to trust it.

I'd consider an Apple but I'd have to get all my files over and then learn a new OS & system. AZThat would take time, and time could be in very short supply and day now.

I don't even know if the Apple store can take a bare PC drive and blow the files over using a power supply & SATA hookup, tho they likely could do it.

If the screen was last connected to VGA it may still be looking for VGA.

See if you can find a Menu/Setup/Input button on the LCD and switch it to HDMI.

Check the capacitors on the video card and motherboard, been seeing them fail a lot. If they are bulging on the top or look like they are sticking up off the board more than others they are bad.

I was just thinking it would let you know if the HDMI/DVI was working on the monitor or is the ne wcomputer was bad. If it is the new computer I would think they would warranty it.

You can stick your SATA drive in an external enclosure to access the files that way.

yes to both - the asus desktop worked fine with both cables, then developed what seemed to be an intermittent problem with the long, cheap cable

I switched it back to the short cable but it does not work - black screen & monitor says it is going to sleep

The screen works fine when the laptop is connected via the VGA cable.

Does this necessarily mean the monitor is not broken at all? i.e. the HDMI portion of the monitor is fine?
