What's eating my gold fish?

Well, we got the pond fixed. Thank those who chimed in and suggested Drylok. Now what the heck is eating my fish? Whatever this thing is, all the rocks are turned and thrown all over the pond, floating water plant destroyed, the water is dark like some poured ink into the water. Any ideas? Coyotes, raccoons or is it skunks? I am in LA. up in the canyon. I am going to stay up tonight and beat his azz with a shovel. Oh, the pond is no more 2' deep.

Could be raccoons. I've got a small pond, plastic one from Lowes 3X6X2, that I've seen them getting my goldfish. Only mosquito fish left.

I have the same problem. Racoons 4 sure or evens skunks.
They are smart bastards !!!

john70t 09-14-2012 09:09 AM

Skunks go for grubs and easy pickings mostly. Fish are hard to catch.
Raccoons most likely.
If there are goldfish still left, they will be back.

Dig a deeper/wider pond? Activated light? Electric fence? Them's good eatin'.

Some folks near me had a large Heron or Crane swoop on down and gobbled up everything within minutes.

He had himself quite the snack, and more than once before they saw him in the act.

Geoz1 09-14-2012 09:19 AM

Raccons for sure.

ramonesfreak 09-14-2012 09:23 AM

I'm in new York and its usually mink or herons that eat ours. The mink are unstoppable

john70t 09-14-2012 09:23 AM

If it was a heron or crane, I'd consider myself lucky and purchase more goldfish.

mreid 09-14-2012 09:32 AM

I have a blue heron that tries to eat mine, but they are now well over 10 pounds, so he is out of luck. He does get many of the frogs, though.

Chocaholic 09-14-2012 09:32 AM

Plastic Goldfish. Just sayin'.

What's good eating? Raccoons? They might appear to wash their paws, but they are filthy, disease carrying rodents. I believe it's illegal to kill them, but I'd sure as hell trap them and give them to animal control.

I have a friend up in Mt. Washington who has a pond. All of his years there he has fought animals attacking his pond. Frankly, I'd have given up by now or put the pond inside a structure. The chain link he keeps over it ain't pretty.

Maybe try an electric cattle fence? That's a single wire that might not look too bad. You could double it back or even go around a few times as cattle fences run for long distances.

What is the simple thing people used to use? Like a Model T coil? I guess they can sit energized for hours on end w/o burning out. I'm not sure on that, just that you can power them with a battery or a small 12v charger. They put out a wallop. That ol' Rocky Raccoon will probably crap and piss all over the place. Be careful handling any waste.

Milt, it must be the same Raccoon that are eating my fish up there.

I doubt there's only one. Raccoons live in groups and share. I understand there's a lot of wildlife in MW and Eagle Rock. I like the 2 legged kind and I'm not talking fowl.

look 171 09-14-2012 09:59 AM

I am just kidding about being the same raccoon. But it just maybe, who knows? there are families that cross the street every night. What street does he live on? your friend not the raccon.
