I guess like anything else, it can be used for noble ignoble purposes. I know folks who are hindered by distance or physical handicaps and I can see where FB is an awesome lifeline to their friends and family.
My concern is that I see an entire generation of younger people that don't have a clue how to enjoy life without FB, X-Box, etc. Ain't nothing wrong with the things but they should be an accoutrement to life, not a foundation.
So, to co-opt the phrase " __ don't kill people, people kill people" (item removed to avoid going PARF):
Facebook (or any of the other "Social Media") doesn't make people into self-absorbed narcissistic hermits without any social skills, some people use Social Media to turn themselves into ....

Noperooney.
Priceline, Expedia, and Travelocity and the others all bought your consumer profile.
Your insurance company too....

Never mind it was entirely incorrect, you just got permanently profiled.

One great thing about Facebook: it's cut down on the Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: Fwd: emails every time someone discovers something on the 'net that the rest of us found back in the DARPA days.

And this AM:

Every once in a while, (ok, all the time), someone will fire-up the scanner and post some really old photos.

Brooke Shields getting high back in the day:

And a very young Dave Grohl:

Facebook made a loss last month. So they're pushing more advertising.

I personally like Facebook. I periodically check my settings and make sure that only things I want visible are and who they are visible for.

I have moved between several countries and have friends all over the world. I find it a good way to keep in contact with them and on a simple ad-hock way.

I also use Facebook for our racing team www.facebook.com/coolcavaracing and as already mentioned you need a personal page to have a business or team page.

I agree that this forum and Facebook can not really be compared, but unlike some other Porsche forums I belong to, this one does not require a user to be registered to read what I write - it is open to the public and Google search. My content on Facebook is not.

I could start a thread here just with good stuff from FB everyday.

Who recognizes this guy right off the bat? No one is going to recognise the woman, that's OK.

motion 10-24-2012 09:49 AM

That's the dude from Ferris Buellers Day Off.

motion 10-24-2012 09:50 AM

What pisses me off most about Facebook is that I was planning on going in with a bunch of stock 2 days ago, and I waffled. Now its up like 30% GRRRRRRRRR

speeder 10-24-2012 10:10 AM

Ok, that was too easy. Who is the chick?

kaisen 10-24-2012 10:11 AM

Penelope Cruz?

speeder 10-24-2012 10:11 AM

Why did the stock jump so much?

motion 10-24-2012 10:15 AM

I believe comments made by Zucker about future potential, and the announcement of over 1 billion users.

MattKellett 10-24-2012 12:25 PM

Jennifer Grey?

Winner! :)

She wanted to be in the parade scene and wasn't in the script, so she put on that costume and showed up as an extra. When John Hughes didn't recognise her even when she approached him and talked to him, she knew she was in. :)

That's from Jennifer's personal FB page, (as opposed to fan pages that a lot of people have--started by them or others).

MattKellett 10-24-2012 01:10 PM

I would never had guessed if Motion hadn't mentioned Ferris Bueller.

onewhippedpuppy 10-24-2012 01:16 PM

I thought it was pretty cool for about one week. I uploaded some info on myself, connected with a bunch of old friends, etc. Then I realized that I don't talk to these people because I never really liked them that much anyway, and that it's way more fun to grab a beer with my real friends instead. My wife, however, loves to read what her friend from high school's mother had for dinner.

speeder 10-24-2012 01:17 PM

The actor is Richard Edson. He has such a wonderful and recognisable face, I just involuntarily smile when I see that guy. Him in the Ferrari in FBDO is comedy gold.

McLovin 10-24-2012 04:20 PM

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Brooke Shields did not sign the Model's Consent form for that picture.
