I have to add,

My little rant and my troubles pale in comparison to some..

A childhood friend of mine lost everything. Some co-workers lost the majority of there belongings, are living in flea-bag hotels that FEMA has secured..

Another Co-worker had just moved into a new rental house the week before Sandy..
He has not heard from the landlords since Thanksgiving... the contractor doing the remediation and restoration has not been seen in 3 weeks

Heres another storm casualty from Sandy.

Old Orchard Shoals lighthouse , off of Staten Island. Completely washed away.

Pretty sad,, I grew up boating around this lighthouse, and it is the one that pretty much spurned my interest in them. It was also purchased recently by a private owner. The govt, auctioned off a bunch of lighthouses around NY harbor last year. I had even placed a bid on it.

Yeah Tim it's all relative. It's the greed of the insurance, (business in general), that irks me.

It clearly states

"Total Contents Coverage= $0"

They will pay for damage to the physical property, repair to foundations, replacing drywall, insulation, replace your boiler/furnace/hot water heater/fusebox/receptacles etc...

Sorry to hear this. Make sure you get the undermining of your foundation and basement addressed. If you did not buy contents coverage then that is too bad.

Somehow, I tend to think it's all bluster. Hide the women and children and call FEMA for those trailers. Don't mean to downplay it but the media goes overboard on these things, everything is exaggerated. I do hope everyone is safe.

Living where I live we are always ready for extended power outages, downed trees, etc. This was last fall during the storm damage from the hurricane. Fortunately, just a glancing blow. Although some areas of northern VT and NY are still recovering. Main problem was flooding.
I hope you don't offer advice for a living.

What's the latest on this?

Is life back to normal for most people?

dafischer 01-25-2013 09:30 PM

Well, pretty much here. Not so much for many on the hard hit eastern side of the state, they're still in a world of hurt.

Seen that. Great video.

What really pisses me off is the fact that Seaside is getting all of the attention, and not the rest of the shore that got trashed. We got hit bad up by us also, and the media barely talks about it.

People on Long Island are still living rough with no heat, no power, and some with no homes. It's been dangerously cold as well.

I finally purchased my generator for my house. I got something that would run the essentials (a handful of lights, refrigerator, tv, internet, boiler). I took it for a testdrive this weekend. Worked great and only burns 5 gallons a day! Between my cars i'll get plenty of power. Watch how the next time I need a generator is 10 years from now! Go on Sandy...I am ready for your ugly sisters!

My short term plan is to simply use extension cords. Long term, is to take 220 line into house and put in a transfer box in. If I want to go all out, I'll convert the carburetor to natural gas.

Needspace, hope you are not a prepper... hehe... as they are usually gun fanatics...

America should follow Canada's lead on gun control!

Now a one off blizzard. 2 feet + snow with 60 mph winds. We must not be living good up here :(

widgeon13 02-08-2013 08:13 AM

Don't count the chickens until it's over, they always exaggerate the story. Let's hope it doesn't materialize. Watching Al Roker this morning he looked like he was prepared for Armageddon and it was barely snowing.

Up here they were saying 10" to 16" yesterday, now it's down to 6" to 9". I'd welcome 10" to 16".

Good luck! The wind may be the worst part of the storm.

It's going to be a non-event up here. We get 6"+ on a regular basis and the news never reports it because we live in the sticks! I do worry about the wind though, we have big trees near the house.

Take care.

I hope you get a good dump in the Sugarbush Valley, was there last Monday and ski conditions were in need of some natural snow.

All that rain we had a while back has put a real hurting on the snow situation here.
Our local area has been closed (no snow making) for a few weeks now.

widgeon13 02-08-2013 09:10 AM

Yep, MRG has been closed as well, what a shame. It started out nice.
