Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - My take

With so many of y'all in Cali, I expect umbrage from y'all for making this post.

I rewatched Once a upon a Time in Hollywood tonight. I still don't care for the movie. That's an odd thing for me to say. It's by my favorite director. The filming is excellent. It stars some of my favorite actors and they all do a great job...

It's just that the story is a bit too Hollywood specific, both in era and industry, for me. I can envision prop managers, grips, camera men, and long time residents, thinking the movie is great. Me, I've never been to Hollywood. To me the movie is just three or four awesome action scenes, and an hour of fill and shoe leather.

Disagree if you want, but I think it's far from Tarantino's best work.

Tarantino's best work is "Jackie Brown" but that's a very high bar.
Which is also Pam Grier's best movie!

I really liked "Django Unchained" and "Pulp Fiction".

- The rest are re-watchable any night of the week.

He's a great director, certainly in the top 5 of all time!

I like the movie a lot, along with Tarantino's others. Set in 1969 when the Manson family was active, I was dreading what I knew was coming. Fortunately, Tarantino changed the story like he did in Inglourious Basterds. The vintage cars and Hollywood, and Spahn Ranch with the family was great. My favorite scene was this one with Mike Moh as Bruce Lee:

I watched it again the other night for the third or fourth time. Although I knew what was going to happen, I still enjoyed it.

Watching the first time, it was a surprise ending.

Tarantino has a lot of good movies.

I watched recently only because I read it was loosely based on Burt Reynolds and Hal Needham. I didn't hate it.

I wasn't a fan. I am a huge Tarantino fan. Just rewatched both Kill Bill movies and Django Unchained on Netflix in the last month for the Nth time.

I just didn't "get it."

I think it's an excellent movie, not to mention a lot of the period music.

Tarantino really had a knack, and knew when to stop...

The first time I saw it, it didn't do that much for me save for the last 5 minutes, which is extremely odd given my passion for everything old school California. Times 2 through 5 seeing it, have loved every single minute.

I rather agree; however, my favorite is Death Proof. (Half of his double feature homage. The other half is Planet Terror.) The biggest reason is Kurt Russell. He's perfectly cast, and dear Lord he's perfectly delectable. The women's shift from being prey, to being bad ass, was cathartic. It's like I got to punch every guy that's ever made me feel threatened.

The ending of Death Proof is great, but when I watch movies, I really like the ambiance created. So, I really liked the long bar scene and the rain falling down, drinking to just kill time. Reminds me of growing up.

Think I've watched it ten times.

By the way, I've read it was Tarantino's least favorite movie he did.

Alfred Hitchcock, I mean Quentin Tarantino likes to always stick himself in his movies somewhere. He's not a great actor, but does OK.

I liked Rose McGowan in that particular movie...

Now I need to watch again for number 11.

Once upon a Time in Hollywood is one of my all-time favorites. I watch it probably once every six months.

I commented there and now feel different. Like many QT movies I need to watch them a couple times to really follow along especially Pulp Fiction. The first time I walked out of the theatre thinking what the hell did I just watch? Watched it a few more times and it became one of my QT favorites.

OUTH has grown on me as well. Like many have said it nailed the look and feel of SoCal in those years. I remember those sights enough to start recalling outdoor feel and smell. Dixie, there cannot be too much Hollywood in a move with that word in the title

Edit, Mike Moh as Bruce Lee was great but not a stand out as the entire cast did an amazing job. Still sticking to my guns with Leo the film stand out. Great performance.
