Good boot knife......

A question...

I am not going to be using the "clip in" type of pedals on the PX-10, instead going with the old fashioned original style instead.

What is everyone using for riding shoes? Tennis shoes or something more specialized?

Joe

Joe Bob 01-29-2013 11:47 AM

If you are going to use a bike shoe, they have the advantage of a stiff sole and cinch down ratchets or velcro. Old school cleats that have a recess for the pedal can still be found.

A flexible shoe is not optimal. Probably a mountain bike style would be best.

On the other hand, old knees really like the Speed Play pedal. ;)

What's the word on "Fat Bikes"?

Are these one trick pony's? A flash-fad (like fixies)? Or a legitimate branch of off-road cycling?

I took this pic at my LBS - its the owner's bike.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359489636.jpg

Hardtail single track downhill.....good for what it's designed for unless I miss what it IS designed for.

They are huge around here. I bought xc skis this year, but I'll have one soon. Rumor is Specialized and Trek will have one out soon too.

They work in the snow, on the beach and starting to see them all year round. Some guys around here have some neat blogs on adventure trips with them. Think riding frozen rivers, waterfalls and the shoreline of Lake Superior in northern Mn.

I have a couple miles on one, and they are fun. The Moonlander is kinda on the heavy side but in this class who cares.

Cool! I heard they were invented in Minnesota.

The owner says it's the most fun bike he has. He says it floats great on snow, but is an amazing plain ol' trail bike, as it has gobs of traction, and is very comfortable. It also does not require the maintenance of a suspension bike.

He'll be racing it in a fat bike class this year.

It does look fun, but his copy is way too big for me to ride to try out, and I also wonder how much of his pitch was sales vs. honest opinion.

Traditional Leather Cycling Shoes - Dromarti

I find any "mountain bike" shoe works fine w/ old-school pedals and toe clips. Their soles are stiff enough that your feet don't get sore/tired, and they have enough tread to grip the pedal.

In fact, I wonder if you couldn't put a stiffener material inside a pair of old-school track flats, ones w/o too much padding in the sole. Something like Mens Nike Zoom Waffle Racer 8 - Track Spikes on SALE

That's funny about the Dettos. I had a pair of those and hated them. Neither that or Sidis, Vittoria, or a few other brands. THere weren't too many choices back then. I even went to that bike shop in Milan, Detto Pietro's, the last time we were there.

If you want to ride around in a semi truck all day long, then ride that. Climbing on that thing must be fun. Instant skinny and lose your gut in three rides because you have to work 10 times as hard to get going. No fun unless going downhill in the snow or heavy sand.

It would be a fun 5th bike for that day that you really needed to do something goofy while trying to be cooler than everyone else.

add a 125cc engine and it would be mo'better

Sounds like what they said about 29er's.... Only a matter of time before they have carbon frames and weight weenie parts.

Think the first fat bikes were "invented" in Alaska.

I have some delta brake pads. Maybe four of them.

Price? Remember rain makes them miserable.....but in Arizona....prolly not a problem.

look 171 01-29-2013 05:17 PM

I a m sure you can find some old bike shop that has some of the older shoe hanging around. Talk to your track riders. I think many of them still ride pedals and clips. A stiff sole is a must, only if you are serious about riding. How fast and fast do you want to go? If speed is your thing, then buy a modern bike. Get a pair of riding shoe with a slotted cleat, and go and have fun. I know someone up here who still have a bunch of them, now old stock, hanging around. I don't know what they look like(dolor and such), but I know he's got some. I like black myself when it comes to old stuff like that. I still have my Adidas and Diadora, some where?

Old pros use to soak them in water and ride them to get them to soften up and conform to your feet. This info was passed down from an old German semi-pro from the old country back in the mid 80s. I was dumb enough to listen, but I think it worked.

I just turned 60 so speed is not an issue. That said am not going to be in some pimped out set of day-glo shoes either. Black with vent holes works very well and looks "period" and thats hopefully what I will end up with.

If your friend has anything in the 45/46 Euro sizes please let me know.

Thx,

Joe

Seen it? HA! I OWN it - LOL! My brother gave it to me for Christmas a few years ago. Also have Bicycle Dreams, Race Across America, and Race Across the Sky.

Makes time on the turbo trainer alot more fun.

That's what we did with our shoes when I was racing but then this was in the mid-late 1960's and we learned from the old farts... like I am now! :)

We just set a record for rainfall here in AZ for the day. 1.4 inches in one day, most in something like 20 years and that was during a monsoon. We have 10 days a year that are cloudy, otherwise its sunny and dry, so wet is not an issue.

That said the links to the shoes I posted some of them cost more than the bike is worth, so not going to be riding with those!

I will check next time I go up there. Most of his left over stuff are from the mid to late 80s. I think you may know how the 80s colors go, but in the road cycling world, its still pretty reserve?

look 171 01-29-2013 08:12 PM

I was someplace and came across a pair of nail on cleat old shoe that was on display. I was thinking to myself, those things look like they are from 3000 years back. I started just right after that that had screws under the sole. I too must have been caught up in that whole getting old BS.

Joeaksa 01-29-2013 08:15 PM

Look,

We used to nail our cleats to the shoes... was old school back then!

Would prefer black and "old school" looking... none of this velcro and day-glo stuff...

Thx, Joe

look 171 01-29-2013 10:53 PM

I will go through there next week, so I get off the fwy and check it out for you and see what's on that pile.

Check ebay, too. Maybe even haunt the goodwills, I gave away a really nice set of sidis a few years ago when I finally changed my last bike over to clipless.
