Hey- out of curiosity, who bought my Viner frame some years back (off PP) ? Did anything ever get done with it? Even if it got trashed or sold off, It would be cool to know! ;)

(I'm salivating at all these cool bikes hanging off walls)

look 171 11-10-2021 07:24 PM

The Gypsy just looks so much better in a Gios then the Benotto

Yep, those three bikes looked great on the wall

CurtEgerer 11-11-2021 04:23 AM

Most frequent question from non-cyclists when seeing the setup: my god, why do you have 3 bikes!? Answer: because I sold 4 that I didn't have room for. :)

Just ran across this and thought I'd share. I love seeing different parts of the country, and some cool bikes. Wyoming, Michigan, Ct... Columbia river, etc... Even a woman's bridgestone I used to build in the mid 80's when I worked in a bike shop! enjoy!

Emergency impromptu bikecamping pics:

From Where: not exactly known
Decided- tonight
Stardate- tommorrorrrowwww.
Weather- lows in the 20's

To Location - Not known. Some mountain on wv/va border.

Miles- unknown

I've thrown four bottles of water's worth, a bottle of wine, a hammock tent, a bottle of advil, a sleeping bag, and some spare tires onboard a trusty rig I pulled out of a neighbor's trashcan in 1998. I will load clothing, food, and gloves/hat, and a bic lighter tomorrow.

What could go wrong? (Great adventures take risks)

My Sram 11 speed chain was between .5 and .75 in the fall and I always like to change them out rather than changing out cassettes but couldn't find one.
I was at the Wilds of Canada bike shop in New Denver BC this fall and asked the owner (Rob) if he had a chain for my bike. "Ya, I think I just got some in"... Score!
Amazing how a new chain makes everything more better! (providing everything else is in good shape)

David 12-01-2021 07:14 AM

I change my road bike chain once or twice a year depending on how many miles I ride. Funny how quickly I forget how good a new chain shifts. One day I'll think I need to adjust my rear derailleur and then I check the date on my last chain order and sure enough, it was a season ago.

My new-to-me 2016 Specialized Stumpjumper S-Works hardtail 29". Everything in carbon, XTR Di2 groupset. Really lightweight, really stiff. Now all it needs is that its owner gets back in shape!

Sorry I can't find any cycling pictures but I do have a little history for everyone.
A long time ago in the San Diego area to start off our racing season we had a two day race, first the Willows Road Race (where Viejas casino is now) and on Sunday the UCSD criterium which I came in 4th, my best finish of 4 tries, In 1979 (I think) the Senior 1/2/PRO group took off and after 10 laps or so Greg Lemond took a flyer. NO one decided to chase so he lapped the field and then sat at the back of the pack! At the finish a rider from Colorado thought he had won......but he was second! He was really po'd.

In the week before the 1984 Olympics, Mark Gorski, about Americas best track sprinter was taking a training ride through LaJolla and ran through a stop sign. Officer who hated cyclists stopped him and gave him a ticket which the judge later threw out!

For several years there was a great criterium in down town LaJolla and it was the Seenior 1/2/PRO men and women. As I was president of the LaJolla Cycling Club I was one of the original people that thought of it along with Richard and Mike. I also road in the pace car (427 Cobra replica) and shot videos of the pace laps. There is a video I took on You Tube if you look for the "LaJolla Grand Prix Bicycle Race"!

Thanks David. Will admit that I'm very lucky to have been able to purchase this bike and look forward to many miles of riding along with my twin 19 year old boys.

I think these young ladies are so much better looking then my time from the mid 80s. We has Carpenter, Twigg (I thought she was good looking), then there's Jennie Longo and Bergund (Sp) from Sweden, I think? None of them are lookers like we have today.

sc_rufctr 01-10-2022 08:06 PM

I can't disagree. There seem to be a lot of good looking women pro riders right now. Maybe it's the Instagram thing?

I think there are just many more women riding. A lot more people riding period. Women Pro team was unheard of back then. To be honest, I think we are just getting old and our standard has just been down graded:D

Glamour shot for the magazines?

And yes at time when riding with much younger people I feel old. The hills have been killing me lately. I need to drop another 10 pounds but I like eating. :( ... However I have lots of younger people who bring their bikes to me for service. Most of them can't repair a flat on the side of the road.

That's true. Lots of people riding today. Back in the day a lot of women that rode were Bi or Lesbians and looked like it just quietly. (Insert Seinfeld quote: "Not that there's anything wrong with that")

There's also a world wide shortage of parts right now that's only getting worse. I tried to order an SRAM 11 speed chain recently and the web site told be I'd have to wait 18 months! The local bike shops didn't have any so instead I used a Campagnolo 12 speed chain I had spare and it worked perfectly. The customer is also very happy.

Yeah, where are they? Sitting on a cargo ship parked somewhere? Why are you experiencing shortage? I blame our dumb gov, but yours too?

I didn't think they were butch chicks riding back then, just not too attractive unlike ones today. I hung around the track for a few years, (raced for only two and discovered I suck at it and too small) there were a bunch of girls racing but they were all just not too good looking. Maybe I was younger, most that raced were in their 30s or older?

wait, so you do this for people? Like a small business or just something you do on the side to keep you outta trouble?

Yeah, I like to eat too. Can't seem to stay away from anything with carbs. Damn rice, noodles, bread, potato all are so good. Isn't there's a 12 step program on eating? I gained 12 lbs during covid from eating pizza and such junks because kids like it for lunch and I was aound. I put a stop to that a couple months ago, started riding again. Lost 10 lbs and now, I can't seem to loose more. I know, its my eating, still. Rode up 1800' of ball busting hills today trying to justify ribs my wife cooked up for dinner. Another, 10 lbs, I am good to go and get up those damn hills a little faster. My fighting weight was 145 lbs. 165 now, so another 10, I am a happy camper. Its going to take a lot of discipline to keep my hand out of the cookie jar.

sc_rufctr 01-10-2022 10:13 PM

Over the years I've ridden with many "Butch Women" on the track - Big muscly legs with no bOObs but the girls can ride! ;)

I can't even find half decent bar tape locally right now!

I've had these for a while: NOS Campagnolo Record OR hubs. (The OR stand for Off Road or MTB) These are very rare. I plan on building them using 600b carbon rims for a gravel bike. The Freehub is 8 speed but I have the parts to convert it to Campagnolo 10,11,12 speed.

I've always worked on bikes and built wheels in my spare time. I started around 14 or 15 so close to 40 years now. At one point I was brazing frames for a local builder. This was before I joined the Army at 20... I lost my job because of Covid almost two years ago so I decided to retire. Working on bikes & building wheels helps me stay busy but I don't make any real money doing it.

On weight: I like food so I have to keep riding EVERY DAY if you know what I mean.

sc_rufctr 01-10-2022 10:25 PM

Copied from the SA Police Faceplant page. You can see the Adelaide hills in the background.

"South Australia Police
It’s cycling season in South Australia. The Santos Festival of Cycling is set to commence next week, bringing cycling enthusiasts from all of Australia into our great state.

Road users should expect a greater presence of cyclists on South Australian roads particularly through our hills regions.

In 2021, 5 cyclists lost their lives on our roads and 86 were seriously injured.

South Australia Police are encouraging cyclists and motorists to safely share the road and show mutual courtesy and respect.

Sorry to hear about your job situation. What type of work did you do before retirement?

It is funny how we go back to something we know well and enjoy doing it. I started about 16 also, building wheels for myself then work in a shop putting bikes together and built wheels when needed. Scary someone is riding on my wheel:eek:

Every chance I get, I wrench on my friend's bikes with the exception of the new stuff. No tools and have to learn how to take the BB out. Its has gotten very complex. A guy I met on the ride is putting together an old steel road frame, Yeti, from the 90s and he has no clue how to do a thing on it. Only thing he did was paint it. I was hinting on Campy 9 speed but DA won out due to cost. too bad he's putting on some crappy America Classic wheels instead of Mavic's Cosmic, the early alum., or Open Pro CD on there. I don't do this often but I will enjoy this. Now, I only need to buy a frame table. Hey, your box of Campy tools will come in handy come to face the headset.

sc_rufctr 01-11-2022 12:14 AM

Thanks all the same but it was my decision to retire. Lots of hard work got me into that position but I've also been very lucky in life. I looked for a new job for a while but I didn't like what was on offer. Funny thing is I'm now very busy doing all sorts of stuff I never had time for when I was working & raising my kids.

I used to work in the IT support field. My last job: I had worked for a company for 18 years and they decided to retrench me to save money even though they had just secured a new major contract with the local government. As part of the Gumbit contract 70 odd people transferred over to the company I worked for and it was a condition that they couldn't retrench any of those people for 24 months so they cut existing staff instead!

Funny thing is about 10 months after they let me go they lost a big part of that contract because of multiple missed milestones. Maybe the dumb ****ers cut back too far? ... lol ;)

Campagnolo Ekar - 13x1 :D
(Not one of mine but I'm planning on building something similar later this year)

Those wheel looks heavy with big rubber. Takes some effort lugging that thing up a long hill?

sc_rufctr 01-11-2022 02:06 AM

By road bike standards they're heavy but those tyres are tubeless. They're lighter than they look & that bike can go anywhere.
