what is the best single cup gourmet coffee maker

Christmas is coming and the wife wants to can her single cup coffee maker. I want to use this for a Christmas gift (I'm interested for myself) but I don't wamt the usual mass merchandised machine and I can't make sense of all the ones offered. Need experienced thoughts.

I needed something that I could make a nice cup of decaf separate from my wifes full-octane morning Joe. I looked at the Keurig machines but have had friends with them that had problems with pumps etc. I also couldn't justify such wasteful packaging and expense of the single cups.

My solution was combo french press/insulated travel mug. French press is the best coffee IMHO and this one has been great:

Yes, you have to clean the grounds out of the mug every day, but it's not that big of a deal.

Gaggia. I have one at the office. Clients love it.

I have a Jura-Capresso super-automatic for our regular coffee. We use a Keurig for decaf. My wife will make a few cups of decaf a week, and the k-cups don't seem to go bad. I can put ground decaf coffee in the super-automatic, but usually the coffee goes stale before we use it.

Keurig has a adapter for when you run out of the k cups or if you want to use it for regular ground coffee.

Hario syphon.

Makes an amazing gift, looks awesome on the kitchen bench, and makes an awesome coffee.

Bialetti stovetop espresso maker ("Moka Express").

I love the super automatics. Give them beans & water, get a fresh ground cup of joe by pushing a button. Lots of settings, but once dialed in to your taste, same cup every time.

We have a Delonghi Magnifica, similar to this but an older model: DeLonghi ESAM3300 Magnifica Super-Automatic Espresso/Coffee Machine: Amazon.com: Kitchen & Dining

Also have good experiences with a Saeco.

We use a Keurig but I still like the term "french press", sounds dirty.

+1. Have had a Nespresso for a few years and it's great. Can froth milk (or not), espresso, capuccino, or regular ol coffee. Customer service is great. I believe it's a subsidiary of Nestle.

The Keurig packing isn't the most eco friendly....just sayin'....

mikesride 12-01-2012 10:45 AM

We have both "common" ones. Tassimo and Keurig. The Keurig is a better built machine but the Tassimo actually makes the better cup of coffee. I still like French pressed coffee the best as well but these are convenient.
