Unmanned Aviation Milestone
When I was the Program Manger for Navy and Marine Corps UAS, I didn't have the X-47, which in those days was an Advance Concept Demonstrator, in my portfolio.
I knew all the players, however, and want to congratulate them on this milestone. The video is taken at Patuxent River.

Paul, that's pretty incredible. I assume an carrier landing with a tail hook is the next challenge?

That's impressive as well. I would imagine that landing a UAV on a moving carrier with rough seas would be a pretty significant challenge, that's a very dynamic environment. Sounds like a fun test program.

I feel like I work for the wrong branch now. UAVs are so fascinating to me.

Paul,
These systems will spell the end of Carrier Battle Groups as we know them. Surface ships will face a very deadly new threat. But, it is cool that you ( a simple Pelican) had a hand in working these important systems. DanB

The size is significant. Surveillance aside, the bomb and gunner payload makes this thing deadly I would imagine as well as the range. So do the operators that fly these get wings? Combat pay? Rank advancement for combat duty like air born pilots?

If you get your wings in the Air Force, you have a chance at having a drone as your first assignment. Pretty lame. I would be very surprised if they got combat pay or duty, since they could be operating from anywhere, regardless of where the drone is. With precision bombs and beyond visual range air to air engagements, there really is no need to put a pilot at risk doing that job. UAV's will be filling the skys in the very near future. The military will work out all the kinks. Then the air cargo pilots will be replaced, and after the public sees they dont drop out of the sky most pilots will be replaced that fly passengers. Say it cant happen? Sit back and watch. It already is.
