Chest armor? Really? Is there chest gear specifically made for that, or would my motocross chest gear work? And any pics of recommended "wrist guards"?

Lastly, what is sequelae?

Here's my setup. Killer price for the combo below.

+1 on motion's wrist guard recommendation. Maybe not a guarantee against injury, but at the same time I've seen a host of wrist injuries from snowboard/skateboard accidents. Sometimes these can be injuries with permanent sequelae.

I was at Nakiska for my little guys first ski lesson today. There was a cool 964 C4 parked next to me when I got back to the truck. Thought of Jake...
There was a 20 something guy on the snow holding his wrist on the bunny hill.
I don't think I am durable enough to learn boarding at this stage of the game.

OTOH, my little guys lesson was a complete success.

Have fun and don't ski tired, too sore or too impaired! I never drink until I am done.

Going to ski next week!k

Just got back from alta, snowbird, and the canyons. Conditions were great, very cold but great snow. Please don't get a go pro camera. Even my daughter remarked that when you see middle aged women taking snow board lessons with a go pro mounted, they might be over used. :( my kids demo'd some nice powder skis but I brought my own. Their skis were so nice I would do the same next time. Just bring the boots.

Haha no go pros in our group. None of us are good enough. I have a some pretty solid all mountain skis (Volkl Mantras). If we get dumped on, I will demo some rockered powder skis.

Just documentation for the lawsuit. :D

Hell yeah! I would/will absolutely gear up with that stuff! Question, though...what exactly are you protecting against with the chest armor? I would think that would only be good for prevent penetration injuries, like tree limbs. Is that what they are for, or am I missing something?

Thanks!

I tried snowboarding about 10 years ago. Very fast, hard face plant. There was a walkie talkie in my chest pocket. It broke three of my ribs when I hit. One fracture was displaced and punctured my lung. Hemothorax and lots of pain. Still have a walnut sized lump where the rib healed.

Chest protector sounds good.

Had a great day at Stevens Pass yesterday with my daughter. No wind, nice base, bands of fresh snow through out the day with sun breaks. Heaven.

I think Song is operating but haven't heard of Mystic. Lake effect snow has been pretty productive since just before Christmas. We have had a couple of 10+ inch snowfalls and get an additional few inches every night. It's not Alta or Heavenly but we take what we get back here. At least it's not blue ice. I'll be skiing Whiteface and Sugarbush later this month.

Holy crap!!!!!!!!!!!!! How fast were you going? Surely there is a way to stay at very low speeds until you get the hang of it? Sounds like the body armor would have certainly helped in your case, but that can't be what it's for, i.e. protecting against something in your pocket breaking your ribs! Just damn!!!!

Yep, Moses is exactly right. Its REALLY easy to catch a downhill edge on a snowboard going 5MPH and do serious damage. Its like a pendulum affect, and you get slammed hard. Happened to me my 2nd time riding, and I broke 2 ribs. That's why I wear the chest protector now. Broken ribs and motorcycle racing don't go very well together.

Wow. I thought I was the only one. And just like you, I wasn't going very fast. Once you catch that edge things happen very fast.

At a peak at Snowbird. I can appreciate snowboarding, but can't see any real advantage over skiing, especially with the new ski technology. Being able to go down the slopes completely free with either foot allowed to go where ever you please seems more freeing then going down on one board with both feet fixed. The skis they sell now are almost as wide as early snowboards. Only my opinion and you can't go wrong either way. Also went to Alta which is skier only. Seemed plenty of the groomed slopes stayed that way up to noon. No boarders scraping off the snow!

Hey, stop the cracks about middle aged women on boards. I learned when I was 35. My snowboard instructor was a 24 year old male. He told me that he doesn't see a lot of women learning, let alone "older" ones. Thanks, kid.

I bought a board and love it! Yes, learning was pure heck. I definitely think if I was younger I would be much better at it and my learning curve would be steeper. But to tell you honestly, I just love to be up there. Carving and cruising the hills. Nothing fancy. I love watching the kids in the park though. Some amazing stuff. :)

I did a couple hard face plants trying to learn my toe edge. On time I thought I broke my googles and nose because I hit it so hard but didn't. Thank God I had my helmet for a couple of those falls. I seriously wouldn't doubt that I would have had a concussion without it. Yeah, you don't have to be going fast to eat it. HARD.

heh heh. I wish. But usually guys (it's almost always a guy) who come in with trans-scaphoid perilunate dislocations or gnarly distal radius fractures from snowboarding and skateboarding are also the kind of guys who don't have insurance or any desire to pay their bills.

I've been using those guards. Help keep your hands warm too. :)

I don't have any of the other guards, but I do wear a skid lid....

What are you using them for? I thought you've not been snowboarding yet?
