My father passed in Dec. 2010. He left me with a good work ethic. He also left all of his tools to me but that never happened. Someone else decided that they needed them more and broke into the place where they were stored. They stole EVERYTHING, but they could not take the memories of working with those tools with my dad.
My mother is still alive but alzheimers is stealing her brain. Even though she is alive, she has given me unconditional love, the ability to be compassionate for others, and many many other things only a great mom could give.

I was left 19% in Summit Bank Corp in New Jersey, along with several home, lots of commercial land and a business we couldn't hop to run. My brother is a lawyer in the DOJ, my other brother is a commercial airline pilot. We couldn't manage a bank if we tried, so thankfully Fleet came along and bought the entire thing.

We still had a handful of properties to sell, but my lawyer brother took care of that. The wish in the will was to build a foundation with the assets to cover as many generation after as possible

We should be ok unless my brother who works fore the DOJ doesn't try to "redistribute" it per hos boss.

We all left the law offices in Midtown as multimillionaires and went and ate Subway.

This thread is fascinating. Not regarding wealth or financial matters, but, rather the gratitude or anger that is left. My folks are alive, but I have both gratitude and anger. I also have perspective on how I need to interact with my children, whom I adore.

As I alluded to in my earlier post, I was a very lucky kid. I grew up in a Leave it to Beaver world. The best thing they can leave me is a happy childhood. I will never inherit any major money. Any inheritance I receive will not change my life a bit.

My last parent to pass away was my mother last July. She was frugal and did various projects/jobs since my father passed when I was 21 and my mother was late 40's.
I calculated she spent about $240k on group homes/care homes in the last 10 years of her life. She still wanted to pass on her estate to my sister and myself. So we have enough for extra holidays but have no intention of going out and buying new cars such as a Porsche. I was lucky and very happy that I had great parents.

"Subway"...in the middle of "THE City"...are you kidding me? I'd at least have asked where a "decent" sub shop could be found! It ain't like they're scarce or something...even "Jersey Mike's" (another chain) would be mo-better

You mean because they ate at Subway & not some other sub shop?

Or the story proper (with all that money) is hard to believe?

Lol, my brother is very picky about where he eats. He's a pilot for a commercial airline and was heading to JFK to get back to Asia to resume is normal route. Said he didn't want to take any chances and have to be in the air for 14 hours.

For dinner iirc the wife and I went to Wayne Gretsky's (sp) restaurant because the hotel clerk said we would like it. It was nice and low key as we had asked, and quick. But we never did anything nice in the city and had to head back to Jersey the next morning.

I lived in the city for a while when I was younger but in a bad part of town so I didn't really know anything in mid town at the time.

I am fortunate to still have both parents living. When they do die, I don't expect them to give me anything. They have given me much more than I deserve already. I suspect I may end up with a couple of really groovy aircooled convertibles

My dad left me with nothing; an empty wallet and no life insurance to my Mom. She passed and left me with a few thousand dollars. So be it.

Both of my parents are still with us. But that will change soon. Both of them are in the same nursing home, one with a stroke and the other with dementia. I will miss them both. They left with me a very good compass to live life by.

My parents have blown their retirement on a home addition and landscaping...about $750k worth.

Now they flipped a 2 family into a rental...

Needless to say they don't have much, they don't act like family, they bought my brother 4 dirtbikes, an ATV, and a Dodge truck....after I've worked to purchase all of my vehicles, put myself through UConn (no loans), put a down payment on a house, etc etc...

In the end, I guess they gave me a kick a$$ work ethic...

But I am troubled by the lack of work ethic they've given my brother. At 17, he's definitely part of the "entitlement generation"
