figure i give up coffee and pack my lunch i could "mask" the cost of admission. anyone have a real hammered and folded knife? what's the story?

I would love a handmade Damascus knife also. You have to make sure it's handmade though. Some "knifemakers" use premade blanks to produce their knives.

It's on my "one of these days" list.

You want to make one yourself. Not just buy it. :)

Back to the Damascus. What I found interesting in the Wikipedia article is the fact that the actual Damascus art of sword making is lost. While current smiths make stuff that looks similar, it does not appear to hold up to the analysis, compared to samples of the originals. What a bummer.

You might start looking here if you have a good idea of what you want. Not all of the offerings are damascus, but a fair number are.


For Sale: Fixed Blades

Tamahagane arose as a result of the Japanese having to refine iron-bearing sand into steel. The "bloom" resulting from the refining process is folded repeatedly to homogenize the carbon content and various impurities as much as possible.

The resulting product is beautiful, but it is not "better". It's just high-layer forge-welded steel. The argument could be made that due to the extremely lengthy and manual process of making tamahagane, the risk of voids, bad welds, and inclusions is actually higher than in modern-made "Damascus" steel.

Anyway, vash, what KIND of knife are you looking for? Talking about wanting a damascus knife is like saying you want a red car. I have a few damascus knives, they run the gamut from a Case Tiny Trapper in a raindrop pattern to a full-size cowboy bowie in random damascus.

Looks like a basic all-around flat ground "three piece" knife that could serve camp, hunting, and utility duty.

I would say 4 bills is near the high end for such a knife.

While I'm not a knife expert, I will say I have never heard of this guy before. His knives LOOK fine, but do some research before you plunk down the cash.

Whoops, I also see he is in Latvia. That makes his prices, in my view, too high. The inconvenience of his location compared to yours (if you ever need customer service) combined with the shipping/customs issues, along with the currency and labor cost differentials make me think you should look elsewhere.

That is actually highly inaccurate.

Tamahagane is the product of tens of tons of iron ore that is smelted into a few pounds of refined steel. The forging process removes any remaining impurities. There are 5,000 layers of steel that are folded into a blade less than a quarter inch thick. Any "voids" or "bad welds" simply do not exist.
