903 hp McLaren P1 has something in common with the Porsche 918 and Toyota Prius
It's an electric hybrid, with 300 pounds of extra battery, electric motor, and electric components
Oh, the horror! Just like a Porsche 918 supercar! Let the electric-haters chime in.....maybe they won't see this from PARF (Sub-7 minute 'Ring times, supposedly) Official: McLaren P1 Produces 903 HP From Twin-Turbo V-8, Electric Drivetrain - WOT on Motor Trend ![]()

Yep. The McLaren P1 will qualify for the Federal Tax Credit for Plug-In Electric vehicles. In the US. In the UK. And other places around the world.
In California, you'll be able to drive your P1 in the HOV lane.

Given that it makes 727 hp without the elcetrics and it is rear wheel drive, I'd probably rather have it without the electric motors and battery. I can't see it being able to put all that power down without wheelspin, in the lower gears, and I'd rather lose 10% of the curb weight.
Having the ability to travel 6 miles on battery power alone makes me wonder who would ever need to do that. Pointess, in a car like that. JR |

If I could afford a P1, or a 918, the last thing on my mind would be any of that stuff. If I wanted to save the planet, I'd ride a bicycle. For me, a motorcycle makes a nice compromise.
I just see the juxtaposition of super-high performance and green as not very sensible. Green technology can go a lot further on a car like a Prius and if I "need" over 700hp to get where I am going, another 176 seems redundant. That kind of power needs to be in a track car, where it can be used. On the street, it's just an ego massage for the look-at-me crowd. JR Last edited by javadog; 02-20-2013 at 10:14 AM.. Don't be willfully obtuse.
Tesla received a half-billion loan from the US taxpayer, to produce a car that is unaffordable by 99% of taxpayers.

No one here has mentioned Tesla. How would one make a point without mentioning the subject?

The last post in that thread was in November.
Nice try.

So what's your point?
Is "Telsa" the point? You said I missed the point. You've offered no point......

These super hybrids are awesome. BTW: If you follow endurance racing or LeMans 24, I think you might notice a dominance by hybrids. Back to the streets... quotes of why an R8 e-tron version: Being able to reach high top speeds in the least amount of time is the most important thing that a sports car can deliver, if it can do it by using batteries than we don’t really see a problem. If Audi can truly create an exciting Quattro experience with its new E-Tron R8 than they will have accomplished something truly special in this emerging market. "The R8 e-tron has given a magnificent demonstration of its potential on the toughest race track in the world," (that arguably being the Nurburgring) said Michael Dick, Audi AG Board Member for Technical Development. Dick, who completed a fast lap himself in the R8 e-tron, added: "The record-setting drive confirmed that we are on the right track. To us, electric mobility has never been about sacrifice, but rather is about emotion, sportiness and driving pleasure."
