Google Glass
You've probably read something about Google Glass. Maybe seen pics.
Understanding that the technology is pretty raw yet, like a 1980s Motorola briefcase phone, and will get very slick indeed, like today's smart phones . . . What, in general, do you think? About having constant artificial intelligence in your eyes and ears? Are there things you'd like to do with this technology? Seeing your heart rate, watts, speed when you're riding? Looking at a subway sign in Beijing and seeing a simultaneous translation? Stirring a pot and seeing the recipe floating in front of you? Walking to a meeting and seeing alerts for stock action and volume? Any reason you'd like to see Glass happen? |
Yes, because today I need four 35" screens on my desk at work. This could reduce that to one and a set of glasses.

This will be a transcending technology. I'll be an early adopter, and will use it to stream live video from inside my race helmet to my family. For anyone with an appetite for information, this device will be indispensable. I want to know everything about everything, so yeah, I can just see myself OD'ing on this kind of tech. My wife doubly so :)

I knew this was the next step away from smart phones, 3D, and high pixel digital cameras...
DAMN IT! I need investors! |
The adaptation for industry is staggering...its just one step closer to chip implantation...

Modern technology was supposed to make our lives easier, but frankly, the speed with which my life is getting easier is killing me.
I don't know half of what my phone, computer, and iPad are capable of doing and I'm too busy having a life to study them. Usually by the time I get up to understanding about 75% of a device's capability it's obsolete and I have to start all over with the latest and greatest. |
gives you a very small and light wt. screen to use with your iWatch
- think about the components in a typical laptop, then subtract the keyboard & screen - alternatively, think about taking a Mac Mini and wrapping it around your waist on a belt |
Imagine this for work. You are in a power-plant and as you walk around, it can identify the different pipes, what the temp, pressure and flow are for each. You look at an instrument, valve, etc, and instantly know what it is, what it is measuring, the position and the value. You can then pull up graphs of that, or any other variable.
I see a lot of uses for it. But until it is used for Porn, it will not be properly adopted. How about you're both going at it, and you can suddenly switch to see what your partner is seeing? Makes the "mirror on the ceiling" seem so 1970's... |
Guys watching porn while poking their less than attractive wives........
(that cuts both ways of course.) |
people will be wearing these while driving - you think cell phone drivers are bad, just wait

On one hand it seems cool... maybe useful at work as others have described... However I work with tech all day and am looking for ways to disconect when I get home. Is this really new? People have been doing the computer dispaly in glasses for years. |

Now you got me thinking of several apps that could support such a device! |
Combined with FaceBook facial recognition (using their preferred services sourced from numerous sources), as an "Elite Customer" I can just look at people on the street and access their entire personal information.
Instantly. How convenient! (Oh yeah. And their personal photos taken on any wifi camera) 1984 for the 1%. Privatized. |
Sounds like Brainstorm the movie

I wonder what the long-term physical side effects of wearing these glasses will be -- without doubt it will cause headaches and strained eyes. I wonder if it can cause sometime like lazy eye, due to the need to both focus ahead with one eye, and on the screen to the side with the other eye.
That said, the business applications can be significant, as outlined above. On the consumer side, it may also have interesting implications, but it is just moving the mass 'sheeple' to more of a disconnect with the real world, and more of a connect to the augmented/virtual reality world that exists on the interwebs. Whatever happened to people connecting with other people in real life? With google glasses, you can pretend to show interest in a conversation with your girlfried/wife/sop, while keeping track of the big game on the google glasses. Guys will love this, but women will despise it! We don't need technology to connect us more to the interwebs -- we need to disconnect and return to living our lives in the real world. /Rant. -Z-man. |
