They are part of the reason my screen name is allaircooled. My stepdad was a big fan of them and daily drove the last one he owned for 18 years. Sold it 3 years ago. A '63 and my mom had a '65 automatic. I thought they were very cool.

I owned two rear engine air cooled 6 cyl cars at the same time .One had a factory turbocharged engine,limited slip diff,sintered metallic brake linings ,tachometer, bucket seats and the other was my 911.

Nothing wrong with the Corvair, I've had many of them over the years. Currently have a '66 Yenko clone sitting in the driveway.

Hope you don,t throw the fanbelt with that loose upper belt guide.

That pic was taken right after the rebuild and before the motor was started. Even with a reduced diameter cooling fan I've never tossed a belt. I'm sure it will happen eventually, just hasn't yet. Plus if you cary a spare belt and the tools to change it your chances of tossing one are greatly reduced.

I never have thrown a belt on any of mine.

I've found that most folks who flipped belts had them too tight. I love my Corvairs and would sell my 911's before parting with them. Been driving 'Vairs since '73

I always sorta liked the things.

A buddy had one (I forget which year) and in the late '60s we'd go flying over the sheety hwys and byways of south Louisiana - every time he tried to pass a semi (at very high speed) the thing would oversteer as he pulled out and he'd correct it while we part way along the side of the truck. We both thought that was great fun...

I posted because I'm reading a book on 15 cars that changed American culture or something like that - I've just started the Corvair chapter.

I'm always amazed at the number of random people who come up just to share their Corvair story with me. Seems like everybody had a buddy who owned one, or a friends dad had one, or some childhood memory that included a Corvair.

And a little trivia. Pelicans spell check doesn't recognize "Corvair" as a correctly spelled word and neither does my smart phone.

It started life as a 110hp with an automatic. I've messed with it a bit over the years.

My first 3 crew trucks were Rampside 95 Corvairs when I started my property management business 38 yrs. ago.
They were mules & never threw a belt - all 3 carried spare belts/tools, just in case.
Two were 2 spd. autos, one was a 3 spd. stick.
Eventually, bought 4 new F150s - sold the beat-up Rampsides to Corvair repair shop owner.

That ramp was great for heavy equip't like 36" platform mowers, compressors, etc. Saved our backs.

BIL had a new Turbo Monza 2 door (180 hp?) - fun car to drive & was the quickest car in our town (14,000 population :) ).

Funny - He would sometimes toss a few cement bags in the front to lower it for looks. Raised hell w/the tires but looked cool. :D

You bring back my childhood with that vid. My dad did the lighting for that place when I was a kid. If I went through their albums I could find some pictures with the posing with the "dummy families" in their store rooms for them.

There's some real hate on those comments for having crashed a mint car, but really, if they crashed a rust bucket, people would blame the result on the rust...

The first car they crashed in that facility was a mint green car of late 60's or early 70's, I was very very young then so I no longer remember exactly the make/model year.

The lights blew the grid with the first attempt to turn them on. I seem to remember putting on a coat if walking in front of them when they were lit to keep from getting too uncomfortable from the heat.

The light levels for that kind of photography is huge. You could greatly reduce the energy with modern LED's that are tuned to the same frequency as the cameras. You'd have to sync it just right though.

I really want a Corvair . . .

A friend is a collector and tinkerer -- my favourite of his collection sports an LS1, running through a Porsche 4-speed. Fortunately he's finally upgraded to disc brakes.

My first car was a 66 'Vair. My dad had purchased it for himself to fix up but never got around to it.

He gave it to me when I got my fist job. It ran well and th interior was perfect. I wish I had know what I know now about cars.

I blew the transmission trying to do burnouts.

I had a couple of them. My first car was a 65 convertible. Other than the heater stink it was a blast to drive.

That thing is bad-@ss! I wonder what the weight difference is between the LS and the original flat 6 that was in there?

I always thought mine had GM's "forced fume heating system"
