Ground Clearance
 

might be a good thread topic, since it is said to be the #2 cause of getting stranded, stuck, etc. (after tire damage as #1)

Compare the following with a typical 4x4 pickup:

1999 Ford Exploder - mine only had 6.7" of clearance

VW Vanagon Syncro - 8.3" (vs. a regular 2wd Vanagon's 7.4")

my '92 Toyota 4Runner had 9.1"

and the new Jeep Grand Cherokee has 10.7"

my 2010 Subaru Forester has 8.7" which is pretty good compared to many SUVs above (and more than the Syncro)


- just to keep it simple gnd. clearance only; no ramp breakover angles, etc.

Boxster has 5 inch clearance. Not enough to clear all snow conditions this winter.:eek::eek:

Ground clearance is between the tires on an axle (pumpkin) or between the axles?

I'm not sure there is an official definition - I just look for the lowest part on the car when it sits on a flat surface.

For example, the lowest part of a 1976 Saab 99E is the exhaust down pipe :mad: - I replaced mine MANY times while cruising thru the Orygun desert on gravel and dirt roads...

I have a first gen Sequoia 4x4. It is overlooked as an adventure / off road vehicle. This is what I find online. I will take a tape measure to it when I have a chance:

Ground Clearance: 10.6 in.
Approach Angle: 28 deg
Departure Angle: 20 deg

I put my TBSS on the stops. LOL. 4WD snow plow. Won't go anywhere in snow.

You always go over or around the obstaclesso the pumpkin clears

Most people get stuck in the sand, or spin their tires in the snow, not hang ups on clearance. My Land Cruiser had about 10". the thing never hung me up in the rough stuff (not the real rough stuff like rock crawling) or the snow. My new 4runner has not seen dirt yet. Not even a dirt road.

My Trooper has about 10" of clearance. I've had it offroad a few times and it does pretty well. I've only had to drop into 4L once for mud.

I haven't measured, but I change the oil in both the Jeep and my pick-up without lifting them up- Just lay on the creeper, roll under, and pull the drain plug. Plenty of room.

Well, that's nice and all that, but it has 10" of ground clearance.
