"Commenting on the visual changes to racecars that happened in the late ’60s, Mr. Gandini said that while the racecars had become more functional, they were 'no longer beautiful for the sake of beauty.' He continued: 'They needed lovely lines less, aerodynamics more.' ”

He said a mouthful there.

I had read that the real story is Ferruccio loved Ferrari's but the engines AND transmissions would not take any abuse. IE: like driving them as they were meant to be driven the drivetrain was constantly breaking - too fragile.

Appearantly, Ferruccio complained about this directly to Enzo specifically that if Ferrari represented the top of the food chain in vechicle development (and Price point) there was something drastically wrong with either design or execution.

Basically no good reason why the cars broke so much for what they cost. After the "exchange" with Enzo - Ferruccio was so p!ssed at his response that he decided he could design and build a better sports car. The rest is history.

Oddly enough, I believe there were times later when Lambo's used Ferrari transmissions - or - vice/vs. Maybe someone here can chime in.
