Who was the best?

Our youngest boy is really into helicopters and space ships at the moment and have been watching some of the 80 shows on Hulu which brings the question, who was the best fictional helo pilot of the mainstream 80s show?

Stringfellow Hawke from Airwolf (and we aren't talking about the sped up film and mach 1 "stuff", just the normal speed action sequences).

H.M. Murdoch from The A Team.

Frank Chaney from Blue Thunder.

What?! No mention of T.C. from Magnum P.I.? He must have had serious skills from all of those missions over 'Nam.

Whoever this guy was

T.C. all the way man....

Eric 951 06-11-2013 11:12 AM

Stringfellow Hawke

He could fly Airwolf, play a cello, and had a brother named "Syngen"

Plus, real-life Jan Michael Vincent is waaayy more interesting.

Nick Ryder. Riptide.

I forgot about that. My Sikorsky-employed relatives would always chuckle when their turbine-powered heli would backfire on startup.

What was with all of the heli-centric shows in the 1980's anyway? Random . . .

Embraer 06-11-2013 12:59 PM

yeah..i still chuckle when I think about how cheesy that show was.

flipper35 06-11-2013 01:04 PM

I forgot about TC and Nick.

I would put HM and TC at the top myself. Hawke had the most baddest, most unrealistic helo, but I always had a soft spot for the Hughes/MD/Boeing UH/AH/MH-6 Flying Egg/Loach/Little bird.

At least the original Chocktaws were piston powered so the sfx guys were only off by a bit with Mimi . At least it wasn't an Iroquios doing the backfire. I do like how they painted the "dirt" into it to make it look they way it did.

Not an 80's TV show, but he could take a look at Flight Lieutenant Wales.
And Flight Lieutenant Wales will be on TV soon enough: http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/uk-news/prince-william-gives-insight-life-saving-1942482

I don’t think there’s any greater calling in life. To be able to see a son or daughter’s face when you bring their father or mother back from the brink of death and you watch them cuddle – it’s very powerful.

I know you said "fictional" - but there are a lot of real life helicopter pilots that can be read about. Encourage him to look at real life heroes.

Is he old enough to read books? Maybe something like Chickenhawk? Or would that not be age appropriate? (you didn't say how old he is)

+1. Airwolf kicked ass.

FYI, "Sinjin" is the British pronunciation of the name St. John.

This! Theodore Calvin has my vote !!!!!!!

im biased though as Magnum is my favorite show of all time

Cash, he can't read yet but does watch just about anything with aircraft, especially helos. We have watched some shows with real life heros, but this was just something fun to think about.

I was thinking about TC. Wouldn't he be a good percentage of load capacity on that 500? He is a big guy. I wonder how he would do in Airwolf?

cashflyer 06-12-2013 08:55 AM

A 500 is pretty strong and has a greater useful load capacity than a Bell Jetranger (A/B).

Of course a Bell 222 (Airwolf) is a totally different class of ship, having twin Lycoming 101 engines and being designed for VIP and EMS ops.

Another vote for TC.

Plus, it has turbos!

If it were on TV today it would probably have NAAWWWS, a fart can and a carbon fiber wing on the back!:D
