Please give me your opinion on this Benz convertible

1992 Mercedes 500SL 90k miles

Got the itch to buy another car. Don't tell my wife. I was looking at a sweet 560SL but this '92 500SL caught my eye. Don't know anything about this model yet so please learn me. Thanks!

I think schumi just picked one of those up....

As long there are no major issues and maintenance has been done, I'd be on it like Angela Jolie
on a pound of Ecstasy.

YES YES!YES! In checking those out a couple of years ago, I came across the info that Mercedes was starting to transition into less handmade production in the mid 90s, so the early years of that model are the ones to go for. That one looks real nice, like the silver color.
I think they made a huge leap forward in design with that model.

Unfortunately, this is incorrect. The later model w129 cars are much better and more sought after, though none of them are all that in demand. They made several significant improvements in the '96-later models and they still are not great cars in terms of being trouble-free or cheap to own.

I think the evaporators on those things are like a 40 hour job...

If you think you Porsche is expensive to maintain, buy that car..........

What could possibly go wrong?

Chocaholic 06-20-2013 04:41 AM

Thinking you were on the right track with a 560SL. Of course, I'm biased. Bought my 88 six months ago and really like it. Took care of some maintenance items (rubber mounts and such), but otherwise it's been flawless. Not a sports car, but a quiet, relaxing and fun car to drive. Love the V8. Very easy to work on for most things.

I love these cars. I agree that the post '96 is the model to go for.

The staggered AMG monoblocks look tough on these cars.

If the wiring harness has not replaced stay away, I believe MB corrected the problem in 1997 or 1998

scottmandue 06-20-2013 08:01 AM

Gorgeous car! And killer price... however speeder is one of our MB knowledgeable folks here if he says stay away I would run.

FLYGEEZER 06-20-2013 08:41 AM

The R129 series SL is the last of the best. The aircondo evaporator is a killer as well as the "greenwire' cars from the mid 90's. And like someone said: "you think Porsche parts are expensive wait 'till ya need a MB part".
