Why fix it? The water is not metered and who broke it? I think the city did by not properly installing it from the get go. Remember they installed it. Ya never know it might have been a latent defect??? Did the City install the line or did a developer? Also, when did the City accept the system because they bought it.

Man, your town sucks. What did they do with the repair and replacement fund that you had been paying into prior to the rule change?

Lesseehere, the town let's you know that there is s leak under the sidewalk and then you worry about the roadway. If it's yours to fix, fix it as you please. If they are telling you that they are going to fix it and send you a bill for the work, just say no thanks.

Maybe you can run a lateral line over to a nearby meter and T off before the meter. Tell them to pull your meter, you don't need it. It'll be interesting what they come up with and they will.

In some cases they can insert a new flexible plastic line into the old metal line. no digging, cheep and easy.

Or, maybe they can do the "blow through epoxy" to seal the line if it's possible to isolate and disconnect the line at both ends. Again, NO DIGGING!

it doesn't sound right about digging up the street. Digging up the street has me worry about the huge $$$$, fees and other BS associated with dealing with the city and the public. What hjappens if someone gets into a traffic accident, like having to go around the mound of dirt on the ground and they hit something? Forget doing that yourself. Have someone else take the risk.

This is smart. We had to do this with a gas line in one of our rentals. It went under a concrete porch, and the sidewalk. Plumbers came in, had it done in 4 hours, total charge was $800.00. Not sure if they can do it with water lines though.

If you are forced to fix it, bypass the meter.

Tell the town your solution is to do nothing.

is there a giant water pool in the street?

how would the town have found out where the leak is without digging?

Traditionally:
-Expenses on ground level, from the sidewalk to the public street, was upon the landowner.
(You still pay taxes on that strip of land)

-All other utilities (i.e water/electicity/communications) up to the meter attached to your structure was the responsibility of the city, county, or private company.
Provided of course there are extenuating, exsting or new, circumstances.

This sounds like a very jerky move by whoever is in charge.

You can hear it running under the sidewalk, no water on the surface.

Ask the city in writing for all existing information.

He won't be able to do any work on public property. Here, we have the city and approved contractors for public works. If I want to hook up a new sewer I plumb to the edge of the property and the public works sewer contractor takes it from there to the main line wherever it is. If I want a new driveway curb cut and approach done, after permits, I hire a city approved works contractor and the public works inspector oversees the job. Not the building inspector.

These cats are expensive and the work itself is labor intensive what with compaction, temporary patch and a permanent patch later on whether it's concrete or asphalt.

Fortunately, utilities to the meters are maintained by the city or Edison here. My gas meter is on the house, but my WM is in the street, so I pay for the length of that line under the sidewalk and all.

YOu said it better then I even can. I was really trying to get him away from even thinking about DIY especially digging up the street part. it has to be done by qualify people and yes it is very expensive. I almost LOL when someone mention using a contractor that do it all and only pay them to do the connection and the owner will do the digging with a couple of illegals. We are not talking about a sprinkler leak here in front of your yard from what Peppy said. Crazy, a little knowledge it very dangerous.

I know my limits...I'm not digging up the street. I may dig up the sidewalk. I'm hoping we can get to it in the grass, but it may be a few more days before we can get to it.

damn. pep, that just doesnt sound right. they own it from your meter to the street. hell, if you own it, take out the meter!!! and enjoy the free water!! they dont make homeowners buy the meter do they?

on the bright side, saturated earth is the easiest to dig!! good luck.

Peppy, you may have gotten some misinformation from the Water Dept. The above sketch seems to be saying the homeowner is responsible for the water line downstream of the water meter. Maybe I am interpreting this incorrectly. Manson is in Warren Co, right? I know in this town we are responsible from the meter to the house. Good luck
