Deactivating/activating the autolock feature
Before following the procedure, make sure that the ignition is OFF and
all vehicle doors are closed.
You must complete steps 1-7 within 30 seconds or the procedure will
have to be repeated. If the procedure needs to be repeated, you must
wait 30 seconds.
1. Turn the ignition key to ON.
2. Press the power door unlock control three times.
3. Turn the ignition key from ON to OFF.
4. Press the power door unlock control three times.
5. Turn the ignition back to ON. The horn will chirp.
6. Press the unlock control, then press the lock control. The horn will
chirp once if autolock was deactivated or twice (one short and one long
chirp) if autolock was activated.
7. Turn the ignition to OFF. The horn will chirp once to confirm the
procedure is complete.

Aren't there bells or buzzers going off as soon as you open the door with the key in the ignition?

Door locks........

My wife's 2013 Taurus won't let the doors lock if the electronic key (has pushbutton start) is in the car. If you try to lock the doors with the key inside, it will chirp and unlock the car. My 2012 Ford F150 has a similar routine. If you leave the key in the ignition and try to exit and lock the doors it will unlock them automatically. I haven't tried leaving the key on the seat or console and locking the doors. Both vehicles do have the pushbutton opening feature so that is also a backup way to get in. On the other hand, why would one want to leave a key in a car anyway? Just curious.

While it is technically possible to lock the key in my 1978 911, it would require that I get in the passenger seat, lock the driver's door, get out, lock the passenger door and shut it.

The OP must have a habit of leaving the keys in the truck but not in the ignition with all of the windows rolled up. I actually agree that all of these new-fangled auto-lock features are obnoxious, but you need to use some common sense with these vehicles as well.

Hope you don't leave it parked where someone has time to enter enough of this to drive away using your keys:

Hold on - technically, it IS possible, but you'd have to lock the driver's door from the inside, crawl over the gear lever and exit from the passenger door, locking it behind you. It is not possible to lock the driver's door from the outside without the key.

Cheers

My 83 Porsche is the same way and yes I have locked the keys in my car exactly how you describe. Lucky for my, I was home and had access to the spare key.

Cool thanks I'm going to try that.

i dont think so. but it does not matter. you can open the door, put the key in, turn it to "on" and say roll up the windows, turn it off, take the keys out, set them on the seat and shut the door and it is locked.

my mercedes has a buzzer for the lights. i dont notice it and have almost left the lights on. this is another one that gets me. that mercedes has ALL kinds of technology in it except........auto head lights. i dont get it.

I did that too in my cabriolet.
It took me an hour to get it unlocked and that was just in time. It was starting to rain and I had to put the top up.

How old is that joke?

Try it sometime. If there are no buzzers or bells, something isn't functioning properly.

If there are... well, it's either a brain disconnect or maybe time for a hearing aid.

That's not an "idiots at FORD" problem.

^^^^thats the point of this whole thread^^^^

Take the keys with you and they'll never get locked in.

suppose you are working on the truck. you replace the alt, go start it up, shut the door and go back to put a meter on the battery. you just locked the keys in the truck with the engine running.

I'd roll down a window.

First thing I do when I'm working on one of the cars.

Forget it, this guy is hopeless. He wants to be able to leave the keys on the seat, (or the engine running), with all of the windows rolled-up in his truck with auto-locking doors and he doesn't hear or ignores buzzers. And he does not want to be locked out. And it's apparently happened more than once.

He needs a shrink, not us.

Absolutely. I work on cars from decades before this auto-lock stuff came along and if the engine is running or keys are in ignition, the drivers window is down. WTF would you want to have to open the door and get in to turn it on and off when you can just reach through the window and around or through the steering wheel?? Jeezus...

Keep in mind these cars are designed in Detroit were carjacking is a serious concern.

Oh bull schit. You honestly think that new, expensive vehicles are designed with a target market of people living in crime-filled slums is what happens?
