Get an Acura mdx. I've had a 2007 that I bought in 2009 that is rock solid. It drives fantastic and this is from one who's other drivers are a 1989 911 and a 2011 BMW 535. It is just the right size and has a 3rd row when needed. I can't see me ever getting rid of it.

Nissan Xterra.

Had mine for over 5 years and had no trouble. I would spring for the off road addition, has bilsteins and sits a little higher. Along with a few other options. Towing capacity isn't that great though (5000lbs).

In my immediate family, these are the 4wd cars or SUVs we've had. All have been used in Minnesota winters as well as tens of thousands of highway miles:

Toyota 4runners: Every generation from first through 4th, all fantastic and trouble-free.

Chevy Tahoe: One truck bought new in '97(?), was fantastic in every way except for fuel consumption. Gas was cheap then, however.

Subarus: Several models, Legacy/Outback/Forester, all fantastic but generally traded before they were ~3 years old. My stepdad likes new cars.

Acura MDX: My sister has had 2 or three, (lost count), all bought new and all still in service as they are passed down to her kids. They are flawless, hence the repeated purchase. She drives an almost new one now.

Volvo XC: One of these, good/tough SUV.

Lexus RX: Flawless for 8 years but pampered and low miles, driven by my 80 year old father. I know other people who beaten them like a redheaded stepchild for 150k miles and they're typical Toyotas, very tough.

Our Suburban looks like a Kabul taxi. I bought it brand new and was appalled with things I found for the first few years. It's just rolling stock now.

I asked her what she would like she said "the Outback or Forester Would be great I rented them in the Midwest last summer I think they are durable and cute"

What ever it is it's going to treated like a rented mule. I hate to see something nice treated with out regard, I spend my time taking care of my cars, I just want something that that will be safe, reliable, durable, cost effective. I will drive it on trips only.

Am I missing anything The Ford Escape ?? maybe to small?

The Toyota Sequoias I like, but I would hate to see it get trashed. I don't think they get good mileage either & $$.

She answered the question, Subaru Outback or Forester.

My 2005 MDX is close to 120k, perfect for my use. I bought it CPO in 2006. Just put some $'s both scheduled stuff and new shocks/struts for the next 120k.

Go with the Subi. Happy wife, happy life. And you'll be happy with the car too.

Drove a 2012 Honda Pilot Touring CPO with 17,XXX miles tonight. Very Comfortable !

Has a big car feel, sending the wife out to drive it tomorrow. I could drive that on a trip without complaints.
