Ya, I can see how helical would be stronger - more surface area and also quiter...give it another million or so years and an increase in the graveity pull and I bet the gears will be helical! Especially if they need to be stealthy as well...

As usual no fossilized precursor to this bug is presented showing what came before and how gears evolved. That is, until someone like Leakey decides to fabricate one from whole cloth.
