Another question for the Veterinarians

my cowboy, 15 year old red heeler, has a swollen lymph node. that's node, singular. about the size of a small egg, but only on the one side. came out of nowhere within the last day or so.

okay otherwise. healthy eater. chased a moose out of the yard this morning.

any advice before i freak and call the vet tomorrow?

That's kinda big. Could be just an infection but could be worse. Where is the node? I'd have it biopsied ASAP lemme know what happens.

They don't really need a surgical biopsy...just a needle aspiration should tell you something.

He's going to the vet this evening.

It's a lump on his left just below and behind the jawline. Doesnt hurt him when I feel it.

He had a lipomas on his belly a few years back. Feels a lot like that. But I've already read enough crap online that I want it dealt with.

Sounds exactly like the lump we found on our Great Dane which turned out to be lymphoma. I hope you have better luck.

An unrelated oral tumor got him.

I was going to say that LSA (lymph Sarcoma) in a dog is often treatable but 3yr is unusual in my experience...more like 8 mos...but chemo has come a long ways since I was really in practice.

I did some online research last night and found that Squamous Cell Ca is pretty common in some breeds. That's what my dog has now. Can be slow growing and does not met unless it's inside the rows of teeth... My Dusty has it just behind his upper left K9 tooth between cheek and gum. I have him on a human (and dog) NSAID meant for bladder CA and it seems to be slowing growth. I mention this just in case Vin's pooch might have the same. Not all Docs know about it. It's a specific NSAID and needs an Rx.. Piroxicam is the drug...

At one time I had memorized her protocol...she (Dr.) was excited about it...been too many years - forgot.

Thanks for the advice and good words.

The vet is 90% sure that it is an abscess. This being bum**** alaska it will take a few days to get the results back.
I'm told it will get bigger over the next few days. And I'll bring it in to be dealt with.

Crap.....that's where my buddy has a growth and my sister didn't want to biopsy it because it would have bled so much being in the gum line. Last year he had a growth on his left front paw and she removed it. A battery of tests, x-rays and ultra sound found nothing except for the lump near his teeth.

Treatable if you get to it early. Likely need to go to Vet School's clinic for the best shot. Surgery and radiation tx. Get with it asap
