Harbor Freight Cyber Attack
Was notified this AM by the security agency from Visa that Harbor Freight was hit by cyber attack within the last 3 - 4 weeks. The security agency put a block on my account but, not before someone in Canada hit for $93. at a restaurant. Harbor Freight will not reveal how many store outlets are/were involved and will not disclose why the cyber attack didn't at least make local news let alone national. I assume they figure that a lot of their "stuff" is bad enough, why scare off other potential new customers. Not the end of the world but, just a pain in the a** time wise to cancel and get new cards issued.

I've gone through this twice so far this year. The first time, I caught a couple of questionable charges on my bill; the second time my bank proactively issued me a new card due to some security breach but wouldn't tell me what happened.

Had an issue with my Discover card earlier this year, first time ever. I noticed because we got an automatic notification that the email address associated with the online account had been changed. Turned out someone had removed our email address and added their own by somehow getting into our online account, then used a cashback bonus to purchase some items online. Oddly enough that was all they had attempted to do. To their credit Discover covered the loss and sent us new cards, it was relatively hassle free.

Frickin stupid, PCI is suppose to stop this but it's such a moving target no companies can truely implement it. When they do it's really just a bogus compliance so they and the so called professionals that audit for it can cover their asses. After trying to secure a vendor I can say that their really is no silver bullet for protecting your data, best to keep and eye on your bill and change your CC ever year
