Washington Redskins

Name change?

Yes or no?

Discuss.

VaSteve 10-10-2013 04:17 AM

Wonder what the guys playing for the team think?

onewhippedpuppy 10-10-2013 04:25 AM

No. Stupid politically correct BS is going to be the end of us.

Chocaholic 10-10-2013 04:27 AM

If a football team needs to change its name, lets start with the Gamecocks.

+1

Of course not. The only people who support the change are white liberal phonies (and a few lawsuit happy Indians in New York) who never watch football anyway. What's next- the Chiefs? The Braves? There are hundreds, if not thousands, of sports teams across the country (and in North America as a whole) whose names are derivative of words describing native Indians.

The name Redskins was evidently changed to honor a specific Native American and was derived from both their former name (the Braves) and the Boston Red Sox. In the only survey on the controversy that queried Native Americans 9 out of 10 thought the name was fine as is. Anyone who has ever heard, much less sung, "Hail to the Redskins" knows that the name is anything but pejorative.

The current controversy is a ridiculous product of the liberal media- in particular the morons at the Washington Post- who now refuse to even use the name.

From Wiki:

Quote:

The origin of the word "redskin" is debated. Some scholars say that the word was coined by early settlers in reference to the skin tone of Native Americans. Smithsonian Institution senior linguist and curator emeritus Ives Goddard asserts that the actual origin of the word is benign and reflects more positive aspects of early relations between Native Americans and whites. It emerged at a specific time in history among a small group of men linked by joint activities that provided the context that brought it forth. [2] That context was the need for a term that all could use in negotiating treaties during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. [3] It is later that the term became more pejorative. A linguistic analysis of books published between 1875 and 1930 show an increasingly negative context in the use of redskin, often in association with "dirty", "lying", etc.; while benign or positive usage such as "noble" redskin were used in a condescending manner.[4] The term continued in common use until the 1960s, as evidenced in Western movies, but is now largely considered a pejorative and is seldom used publicly aside from football teams. As with any term perceived to be discriminatory, different individuals may hold differing opinions of the term's appropriateness.[5]

The Washington Redskins were originally known as the Boston Braves. In 1933, co-owner George Preston Marshall changed the name to the Redskins, possibly in recognition of the then–head coach Lone Star Dietz, who claimed to be part Sioux. Dietz's true heritage has been questioned by some scholars. There is also the fact that, in 1933, the Boston Braves moved from Braves Field, which they shared with baseball's Boston Braves, to Fenway Park, already occupied by the Boston Red Sox. The name Redskins was chosen by Marshall. The Washington Redskins name and logo, which is a picture of an Native American, was officially registered in 1967.
Merry Christmas everyone! Oh wait...we can't say that either can we?

GH85Carrera 10-10-2013 05:44 AM

I agree the PC stuff is silly but the name Redskin is a racial slur no different than Chinaman, Polack or Wop. Would you be OK if the team name was the Washington Kikes? How about the Arizona Wetbacks?

When do we do call it common sense and where is it just PC?

cairns 10-10-2013 05:55 AM

"name Redskin is a racial slur no different than Chinaman, Polack or Wop"

Maybe in your mind. And you are the exception. 9 out of 10 Native Americans as well as the vast majority of Americans think differently. I take it you're a white person of European origin. Suffering from a bit of liberal guilt.

craigster59 10-10-2013 05:56 AM

Rename them "The Fighting Irish".

cairns 10-10-2013 05:59 AM

Irish is a pejorative term. Just ask my Father in Law.

I am about as liberal as Ronald Regan. I live in Oklahoma. I would dare you to walk into a few bars in the state and start throwing around the Redskin term. You would get the same result at some other bars using the dreaded "N" word.

Other (US) teams that use the term "redskins". Note the high schools in Arizona, Oklahoma and Washington state. Again from Wiki:

I did not know that. I didn't think it was any more insulting than "black."

As a white guy, I'd be OK if they renamed them the Whiteskins.

Sorry no insult intended. I am part Cherokee (a very small part- one great Grandmother) and there are plenty of Redskins fans in Cherokee territory.

And I dare say if I walked into a bar in OK and said the Redskins are the greatest team in football I might hear some derision. But only because they suck lately.

VaSteve 10-10-2013 07:25 AM

Clicking on washingtonpost.com shows the name Redskins prominently. In don't see them rewriting it to their agenda like Foxnews's. "Slim down" agenda.

Where'd your info come from cairns?

asphaltgambler 10-10-2013 07:39 AM

I live near DC and this subject seems to come up every year when the season starts. Doesn't bother me. To get to the bottom of this........... just follow the money

FLYGEEZER 10-10-2013 07:46 AM

Don't we have other more pressing issues to address first. It's all been fine for years, 'till somebody decided this is some sorta wound & we gotta pick the scab off and make it bleed. What BS.

I'm sorry it was Slate not the WaPo. I was thinking it was the latter because they've run so many eds and articles opposing the name. To their credit they did publish Snyder's letter.

crustychief 10-10-2013 08:02 AM

I heard they were going to change it to a less offensive " DC Redskins".

sammyg2 10-10-2013 08:13 AM

I figure the name of the Washington NFL team should be at the top of the list for the current admin to be concerned with, there's nothing else going on right now for them to worry about ....
