strange old car
I've been working on an eclectic bunch of cars lately. The Ferrari 166 is cool and simple. The Dino is... well, it is. I love the '46 Ford Woody. There's also the 912 targa, all original. But the odd ball is this Romesche convertable. Never heard of this maker nor seen such a car. This particular one is 356 powered but I guess we have the right VW motor. Anyway, anyone know much about these cars?

I believe Grace Slick drove one (not this one).

I would have thought Grace would have had at least as much sense as Janis did to drive a real Porsche. |
That's just like this one here. I'm almost done repairing that same steering wheel too. From what I can tell, this is the third Rometsch that my shop has done. There was a hard top and another cab before.
Not that I have the correct spelling of Rometsch, I get more web hits. |
I think that's rather interesting. Parts of it remind me of an early 356 - especially the rear end which looks very much like a type 1. Then there are the Mercedes style fender eyebrows, etc.
I like it. I find "vintage" and "quirky" very appealing. angela |
Get a load of those knock offs!
|
I like it. Kind of a marriage of the MB 300/190 and 356.

Got my curiosity, so did a search.
"This beautiful three-seat convertible was hand-crafted by Rometsch Karosserie in Berlin, and is named after its designer, Johannes Beeskow. These cars were produced between 1950 and 1957, and were considered the 'Volkswagen for high society.' The very first one was sold to the King of Sweden, and others were driven by celebrities such as Victor de Kowa, Gregory Peck, and Audrey Hepburn. The aluminum-bodied sports car was never officially blessed by Wolfsburg, and, in fact, VW refused to supply the long-established coachbuilders with the rolling chassis and other parts needed, so they were forced to buy complete VWs through their 50 employees." There's even a registry: the-cars |
APPARENTLY, still yet another VW variant of the time!

Hallo David,
Rometsch build two different models (The Rometsch Beeskow and the Rometsch Lawrence) The pictures posted by Flieger are from a Rometsch Beeskow owned by Eric E. The black /white car you did is a Rometsch Lawrence. Regards Patrick (owner of three Rometsch Lawrences) |
The doors were suicide.
The leather was ox-blood. The wheels were Rudge. The driver, a high-roller aptly named "Slick", used it to chase the elusive white rabbit while she waited for her airplane to turn into a starship. |
One showed up on the first day of the VW Type 3 Rally in Cayucos, CA that happened in the beginning of Oct, 2014. Not a Type 3 VW, but Very COOL!

These were discussed here recently or there was a pano article... i recall ;learning about these fairly recently.
|
The variety of VW/356 based cars that were botique or didn't make it to market. Heck, that is how the 356 started, with the Gmund cars ...
|
IIRC Rometsch and Karmann both competed for the VW convertible, Karmann won because it had a back seat.
...or was that Hebmuller ? |
I'm torn between liking it and hating a 356 died to make it happen. Then again there are lots of 356s vs Rometsch, so leaning towards liking it....
