anyone still fly RC Helicopters?

Looking to get something more serious and stable than my fixed pitch Heli-Max Novus. Thinking of a 400 as the price jumps pretty quick with anything bigger. Looking for suggestions on model and place to buy. No shops local that sell anything but micro and sub micro.

osidak 01-07-2014 06:22 PM

I fly a chaos 450 and 600

Both are clones of the trex models - Look at the Tarot 450 - nicely built, solid flyer and pretty inexpensive

I do but just the small ones. I was thinking of getting a 120/130 but a 300 or 400 would be cool too.

I just got the mSR-X in the mail today.

Have you considered looking at the MCP-X? I'm not really happy with the original mSR but I'm working it out. It just seems to wander a lot. I got a good deal on the mSR-X which is the newer version. Still fixed pitch but no flybar. Less spinning mass and all that plus it has gyro stability for all axis I believe.

My next one will be a collective pitch machine but again probably one of the micros. I like to do it from my desk for a little break here and there.

The one in the MCP2 livery is actually one of the Force FHP with the lazer tag system on it like the blue camo one is. I'm also trying to get my hands on a few more of those so me and my boys can have bigger battles. They fly the coaxial ones pretty good so far.

One of the other things you can do is move up to a more modern computer radio instead of the radios the RTF models come with. I have a DX8 that I use for my airplanes and helis and the mSR is on that and I'm working on getting the config right for it.

Someone (The Mikester??) posted here a POV youtube video kink of some neat flying a couple months ago.

See the Yellow "Labrador" dual prop in the pic? I had one land in my backyard as a kid! My uncle flew them back in the day and the team dropped him off for a visit. I'll never forget that day!

mikester 01-07-2014 06:58 PM

Naw the video wasn't me.

Not into helos, but I do dabble in other RC....
Towerhobbies.com has always been good to me and has good prices.

David McLaughlin 01-07-2014 07:47 PM

I've always bought my RC gear from Tower but even their heli selection leaves me flat. The Heli-Max Axe 400 is a RTF that includes a 6ch Futaba for $400. I was originally just going to order the never Novus 200 but from what I've been reading, a collective pitch could still be a trainer. I'm still having issues with anything but tail-in hover and flight but I think that's because my heli lacks any stability.

The Trex line will take you from hover to wild 3d flying. I hear the knock offs are decent too at a considerable savings. Heliproz has a lot to offer. Check them out.

I'm assuming you're aware of Horizon Hobby? Horizon Hobby - Radio Control R/C Planes, RC Airplanes, RC Helis and Helicopters, RC Cars, RC Trucks, RC Truggys, RC Boats, RC Radios, RC Engines, parts, hop-ups, and accessories

The Blade series is what you see some of on my desk. I have had some of the Heli-max birds. In the gift exchange this year I sent my Novus CX which is a fine flying bird I couldn't bind it to my DX8 so I sent it to someone who would appreciate it (plus I kind of have a lot of CX birds). It was most certainly slightly better than the Blade birds I have but the Blades are really good. I had some older Heli-max birds that weren't so good but I won't hold those against them.

Bottom line - it sounds like you're looking for a T-REX. I don't have first hand experience with them myself but I know a lot of guys who have them in various sizes and I have never heard anything bad about them.

Failing that I would check out one of the larger Horizon Hobby Blades.

Blade | Horizon Hobby - Radio Control R/C Planes, RC Airplanes, RC Helis and Helicopters, RC Cars, RC Trucks, RC Truggys, RC Boats, RC Radios, RC Engines, parts, hop-ups, and accessories

If you don't have a radio you can use I would suggest the Spektrum DX8 - I heart mine.

Sure. PM me your number and I'll call you.

I have a bunch of 450 stuff if you are interested, two airframes, a hughes 500 body, DX7 radio, a couple 6 channel receivers and an 8 channel, motors batteries blades etc. If you want to get into the hobby cheap I could help you out for sure. I have not flown in ages, and my attention at the moment is concentrated on the Porsche and the cafe racer I am building, both of which could use a fund infusion lol.

Let me know if you want a run down of what I have.

I haven't even glanced at helicopters since I've started flying quads.

My copters are hung up by fishing line in my shop, retired.

I gave these away as Christmas presents, the X1 quad for $30, or the green bladed H1 at a few bucks more. And even as a veteran flyer, I still get a hoot and grins horsing this disposable super cheap toy around the yard doing full wing overs and stalls.

$30+

Syma RC X1 Aerobatic Quadcopter Space Ship Drones 2.4Ghz 4 Channel

$40+ ( I do like the green blades better)

Amazon.com: Hero RC H1 X1 Syma Quadcopter Viking Space Ship 2.4Ghz 4 Channel (Lime) w/ Extra Spare Battery and Extra Set of Blades: Toys & Games

The new DJI phantom quads can carry a gopro no problems.

All depends on how you want to play with your sticks.

Gads kids (big or small) are spoiled today by the super cheap / bang / performance toysa out there.

I have a blade 130 which flies pretty good for a FP model. I do miss the control authority of CP. Ive flown all sorts of stuff in the distant past but dont know whats current. Id like a nice 250 sized bird. Big enough for fast forward, but not so big you have to go to a dedicated field.

Blade, trex and thunder tiger have always been the go to brands in the past, but Im not sure what is the "new hotness"

David - I was going back to update this thread a bit and I noticed this and had missed it before.

I'll PM you tonight.

mSRx's are neat.

I like the mCPx and mCPx BL but right now my favorite is the nanoCPx which is a collective pitch heli the same exact size as the mSRx.

It's flipping sweet.
