Art School

What do we know about art schools? Specifically the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD)? What do people do with those degrees?

Interested in knowledge, as distinguished from opinions . . . I already have plenty of the latter . . .

Which degree?

It's not just general art.

Architecture, graphic design, fine art, jewelry design, fashion.......

RISD is probably the best art school in the country depending on specific area of study, without a doubt in the top 3 overall.

Do they have an Art Engineering program there? That would be awesome.

They are expensive. Minneapolis School of Art and Design is like 16k per semester.

BFA< Got One. No ones ever seen the paper document. Its not like a medical degree that gets framed and put in an office. Its what you do with your experience and talent that counts, you make contacts, hopefully good ones. RISD is top-notch and has an association w/ Brown which is also top-notch. Afraid to ask how much it costs these days..
I went a different route and it worked out pretty well, though for me it has been feast or famine. Looking back 25 years ago art school was a very strange & unconventional thing, fun & harmless. Your results will vary.

My wife has her degree from RISD. Fantastic school. After college she remained in the art and design field-- commercial photography designer, painter, stuff like that. Now she writes a blog about art and design for kids. Artchoo! - contagious art and design for kids She has nothing but good things to say about her time at RISD.

A friend of mine went to RISD. It is top notch. She got a job in Boston as an editor, so not really using the degree.

AFA actually surviving with a fine arts degree, the most open direction would be towards web design type things. Working for movie makers in Hollywood or NYC might pan out also. Otherwise...

Wouldn't Art Engineering make you arrogant?

Todd and his wife would be good to ask.

RISD has an exceptional reputation. Gotta love the mascot, too. Scrotie.

GO NADS!

Very cool website.

Well done to both of you, I so admire the creative gene.

That's all I've got, JYL, zero advice on art and RISD...and I'm not petting the mascot.
