Tactical flashlight. Impressed.

My wife is going to India in a few days. She's Indian, knows how to travel, and generally is in very secure situations. But sometimes she does travel in rural areas to see her family. Tasers are illegal in India, so I figured I would get her a tactical light.

I've always carried guns and knives for defense, and frankly have not given a light much thought. I bought her an Olight M20-X Warrior. Color me impressed. The light on the highest setting is blinding, even in a lit room. The strobe light in indeed disorienting, very much so in a darkened room. The bezel on the thing is wicked. Large, reasonably sharp serrations. A blow to the head or face would be awful.

I was a bit hesitant to pay $$$ for a flashlight, but this thing does feel like the build quality and engineering are there to justify it.

I used to be a night time community patroller  and always carried my 650 lumen Fenix. A couple of times a came across Somalis ripping off deliveries from behind shops. They became a bit agressive (these guys are f'ing mad) but shining the fenix in their eyes made them calm down.

yawn...........

2000 lumens.

$15 bucks.

Darth Vader Helmet Piercing Attack Probes included.

It's stunning what these Cree LED lights can generate, I have several similar to this, but no not the Darth Vader Slayer model.

I am skeptical of those ratings though I don't have quantitave data to discredit them. I have many flashlight, a bit of a fetish really, and I have always had good luck with fenix for lower cost flashlights.

There are plenty of forums around where they compair them. And fenix come out quite well.

It's true that a powerful flashlight can be a self-defense weapon/aid. I have a rechargeable Streamlight LED that's always in the car. Sometimes I bring it in at night to recharge it and it's crossed my mind that if I shined it directly into someone's eyes, it would blind them temporarily. At least in the dark.

I know a guy that build or modify a durable and insane flashlight. He takes the host and mod high end off the shelves drop ins. there are sertain way to make them robust and durable. I have had a couple he made for me that I used sometimes for inspection of attics or crawlspaces. With these lights, I no longer crawl into them anymore. Money well spent. If you want or need, pm me for his contact info. He's an EE by trade for Boeing, I think? He not expensive at all, 40 -50 bucks for mods with parts.

They sell tons on Amazon too. I have a few. Amazing lights, particularly given the price.

Rusty Heap 01-15-2014 05:43 PM

semi automatic flashlights.

with large capacity clips..............errrrrrrrrrrr, amp/hour batteries.

mere mortals use .22 caliber un-obtainable flash cubes now.................yes I said flash cubes, ask your parents.

I'm a fan of Surefire lights.... and check yo'tube for kobuton stick fighting techniques. You don't need fancy just a eye full of light and the right spot to hit.

onewhippedpuppy 01-15-2014 07:40 PM

I've owned quite a few $10 flashlights that have never failed. I'm yet to understand why people spend $150+ for a flashlight. But those $15 Cree lights look cool.:)

fintstone 01-15-2014 07:49 PM

Cree makes a 13000 lumen flashlight. Seems like it would be great for home defense (blinding).

look 171 01-15-2014 07:56 PM

I have a bunch of these. All my men have them in their trucks so they don't spend time crawling just to see something. This thing is a tube or host only and you select the drop ins or bulb and batteries. they are not cheap, but very well made for daily abuse, very close to surefire quality. I think surefire has them beat with their switches. Hell, we are not going to war with this light, so why spend another 20% on Surefire. I do have a couple of old Surefires that just wouldn't quit. Great products. Our problem is everyone wants to borrow them but forgets to return them after they are done so in their back pocket it goes. http://www.solarforce.hk/index.php?controller=products&action=view&id=117

I'm always outside working on stuff, so I seem to have acquired several flashlights over the years. My favorites are the Lenser LED M7RX models, which I have 4 of. My brightest is a HID flashlight made by Streamlite. It's not cheap. Then there are the portable stadium lights, but that's a different discussion. I can't see buying a flashlight as a weapon. They are more like everyday tools to me.

As for personal defense, I think a simple stick or club might be better than a flashlight. I prefer the taser, 9mm, or as a last resort the Benchmade Infidel.

fintstone 01-15-2014 08:08 PM

with 13000 lumens...I should be able to illuminate a zombie anywhere inside my 100 yd defensive perimeter. Going to get one for each gun emplacement. What are these portable stadium lghts?

jyl 01-15-2014 08:10 PM

On Amazon you can buy a bicycle headlight with SEVEN Cree XML-T6 LEDs in a single head, for about $30 including battery and charger. Rated at 3000 lumens, probably closer to 2000, but anyway at close range you will see nothing for awhile. Not sure how you'd package it to be a handy flashlight device, but maybe an inventive Pelican whose wife is travelling to India might figure it out and tell the rest of us . . .

aschen 01-15-2014 08:13 PM

I have 10$ 50$ and 150$ flashlights. The difference between the 2nd and 3rd is very slight but present. If you shake or drop a chinese one it may flicker for example. If i was a cop id have a surefire on me otherwise Chinese is fine

rusnak 01-15-2014 08:15 PM

Fint: I have no idea how many lumens or whatnot this flashlight puts out, but I use the snot out of it:

It's very durable, and redefines the word "bright".

And these are the portable stadium lights in my backyard. I use it 3 months out of the year, so I use the snot out of these too. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1389845691.jpg
