Yes, I saw it...texted him. He texted back saying it was available. Then he went radio silent for a few hours. He texted back saying "sold". The people selling the targa said they received several out of state calls from people that were hired by international buyers to find air cooled 911's.
The rear spoiler may go at some point...haven't made that decision yet. Mark...what makes you believe those are 7's and 9's. I assumed "hopefully" 7's and 8's. Rear tires are 215's. Plan to pull the wheels first thing to have a look at the stampings. |
Are the wheels maybe 15s? They look a little small and different than mine.
Edit: Nice score! |
Congrats! You did the right thing by dropping everything to get it, that's a great price for a G50 Targa. You can sort out the little stuff and still be money ahead. I agree that they look like 7/9 Fuchs, the rear lip looks bigger than an 8.

I think those are 7x8x15s. 15s have a narrow silver anodized ring.

8x16 and 9x16 wheels look quite different from that and the extra width of the 9 is not in the lip of the wheel. JR |

Radio "Reno" (long gone) Cruise Central Locking sys Alarm System Automatic Heating System 40% Limited Slip Diff (yes!!!). Was a $722 option Sport shock absorbers (hopefully long gone) Leather covered steering wheel Luggage compartment black velour (looked more like carpet). Really happy about the LSD and eager to confirm what width the 16's are. My guess/hope is 7's and 8's (no way those are 9's). Snowing here in Atlanta metro. Hope all will clear up in time to bring her home! |
I hope they are Mike. Here's my old car with 8x9x15s. Rear tires were 255/50 balloons. Offset was too much so I had to sell them. Wish I had them now! Went with polished Cup IIs for a while. Car was more planted with the heavy 17s, but a lot more nimble with the original 7x8x16s that came with the car.

I like the duck tail. Hmmm. I remember noticing that the rear tires are 215's....so could easily be 7's in the back and 6's up front. Won't complain as I'm glad their Fuchs at all!
Would have thought your second pic was a photoshop of the first, but the snow pile is different. |
7&8x15 were stock in 1987. 6&7x16 were optional. 215 section width tires were used on the rear of cars with 15" wheels.
Those are not 7&8x16. Not sure why you hope the sport shocks are gone. Those would have been Bilsteins, most likely. JR |
I think duck tails work well with the Targa chunky body.

If it's any consolation, I just sold a set of nice 7x8x15 Fuchs for a friend for $1200 (off his 85), about the going rate for a pair of 8x16s. 7s are cheap. Fellow in France asked if I had any more sets, I can hook you two up if you like.

I imagine with the current rear tires being 215s (did I read that correctly?), you must be getting sort of sideways when you romp on the gas. Maybe you can burn them off and get some 9 inch wheels in the rear with 245s? Personally, I think the Fuchs in 16" are perfect but everyone's tastes are different.

Window sticker indicates 16" wheels. But it's certainly possible that someone changed them out over the years. Will have to wait and see. I only hope the sport shocks are gone because otherwise they'd be 27 years and 150k+ miles old. |
The shocks can be rebuilt. Bilsteins are what you want to run and I'd rather have a front Bilstein strut than a Normal strut with a Bilstein insert.
The lighting in the picture isn't great but it looks like you have the 7&8x15 wheels to me. JR |
Congrats on your CL find. it looks nice. I also love the MB, those cars have always been one of my favorites. Enjoy!

Well, she's home and overall, a decent example. Pulled out the rats nest of audio wiring that was snaked throughout the interior, cleaned some things up but that's about it for now. The wheels are 15's after all so apparently someone made off with the original 16's. Stopped by Charlie Grant's shop and he identified the source of my oil drip (oil line) and suggested a valve adjustment after hearing it idle.
Was going to have him do the valve adj (I've never done one), but with a night to sleep on it, I decided to give it a shot myself. (Charlie...may be calling you for advice if I get in a jam). So, Pelican has already made a few withdrawals from my retirement fund, and I'm sure there are more to come. Will be starting a new job on Monday which will be a tremendous inconvenience from the important stuff in life, but really looking forward to digging in to this car as time permits. |
I was hoping to spend more of your money by suggesting these.
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-used-parts-sale-wanted/782795-brand-new-zuffenhaus-fuchs-fikse.html They already sold though. Looked like a smoking deal. |
Enjoy it Mike!

Great find! Enjoy.
