Blue book
 

Well I bought a different car last Sunday so I have put my Z3 Coupe up for sale, there is a sign in the back window, miles, 92k, 2001, phone number, so on. I happened to look out and there was a faded Mustang in the driveway behind the car, some guy dialing his phone. So I walked out to talk to him, he asked how many miles, I just told him 92k, he asked what blue book was on it, I said I have no idea, he looked at me pretty strange, I said it wasn't something I paid attention to, he said thanks and left. So, I don't think a blue book shopper was the right buyer for my Z3.
At least he didn't waste a lot of time and want to drive it.
Should I have looked up blue book, does anyone ask you that?

I go by loan value as that tends to be the real money value

That's a pretty unique car so I would guess that would bring some premium. Can I fit my snowblower in the back?:D

I start with KBB as I think most semi-savvy buyers would start there.

OK, I just looked it up, mine with 92k miles they have for 8.6, I will let it rot before that happens. When you sell an air cooled Porsche do you pay attention to the KBB? an older Aston Martin? A 71 Buick Skylark/455, I have never paid attention or even looked,

KBB has the most ridiculous prices.

There are printed guides for each of those cars. How do you think the guy was supposed to know what a 2001 z3, (or whatever car), is worth today? Just pull some number out of his ass?

The strange thing is, if he had a phone he could just look it up himself in about 2 minutes.

I believe it completely depends on the car and its current "real" market value. No, your car is not a run of mill BMW, it's a bit of an odd ball. You probably keep good records as well. KBB will not reflect true market value on cars of that type. People who don't know about a given model might use KBB as a guide but will soon learn true market value once they start searching around.

The KBB comes in handy for loans or so i've been told. I think if you have some market intel on your side then NADA, KBB or Hemmings is only an indicator but institutions prolly consider them gospel...

Newer cars yes, older cars certainly not. My 08 Camry Hybrid in good condition says its worth about $13K on a private party sale. Seems about right.

What are you asking as a starting point? I agree with the others. Your car is too rare to have meaningful book values.

asking $13k, KBB says $8.600. 92k miles five speed 3.0. I haven't seen one for anything like that. The roadsters sell in that range. Mine with the color combo is 1 of 50.

I don't see how you're getting $8,600. If I go to kbb.com and plug in trade-in value, I get a range of $9,053-11,084, depending on condition. Private party ranges from $10,929-12,329. Using the "real" blue book, I get $7,325 + $3,844 for low miles = $11,169 for low book, and $10,185 + $3,844 for low miles = $14,029 for high book. I don't know the details of your car's options, condition, and Carfax, but market is going to take precedence for a car like that.
