Does he still exist? Is the stereotype still alive? I don't think so. I haven't seen one for several years. We don't have so much to be cocky about any more.

have you been to Texas? just to name one

In Europe you see and hear ugly Americans everywhere, usually over 60 to 75 years old, over weight and dressed like ****. They also make no effort to speak the native tongue

20 years ago I spent a couple of months in the Czech Republic.

I found myself avoiding fellow Americans as much as possible.

A loud obnoxious bunch, but that's what also makes us so great, right?

I guess everyone's experience is different, but I've always found Aussies to be far worse than Americans. I've seen more than one fist fight started by Aussies while overseas.

Americans can be obnoxious, but they're sort of like large, loud puppies. They treat the world like its their living room.

When I travel in Europe, I wear my wedding band on my right hand, usually one of my Sinn watches and I speak German like I speak English. But I try to learn a few phrases in whatever country I'm in. There's no blending in when in China, but I can survive in Mandarin. In Europe it's easy to not get made as an American. I won't carry a man purse or wear glasses just to look stylish. Gotta draw the line somewhere. I have been chewed out by cops in Germany a few times because I made an honest mistake, they thought I was German and should have known better.

Australia is the land of variety. And you will meet some of the nicest people you will EVER meet. But you will also meet a LOT of arseholes. When I'm traveling I avoid the Australians and speak my very limited German when they and Kiwis are around. Too much of that "Last person into the bar is a dickhead!!!" mentality.

We have lots of Americans around here doing film stuff and they all seem really nice and fit in with what's going on - playing with guns, surfing, mountain climbing, eating drinking in cafes, cars, beaches, same as the rest of us.

In SE Asia, it's the ugly Chinese tourist which bumped the ugly American tourist off the top spot.

I had to sew up a 3" gash on my Aussie cousin's forehead. The day he was getting married. Great guy though.

And that's the problem....it's not.

Yes. My family and I were Hong Kong a little while back and every morning at breakfast trhere was 3 loud mouth ******* Americans in their 40's who could not speak 5 words without having a f$%k in there somewhere. There were a lot of children of all nationalties there and yes they know what f$%k means.

Why deal in stereotypes at all? What possible good can come of it?

Be sure to tell that anecdote often because it makes you appear to be of extremely high intelligence that you base your opinion of the residents of an entire country on the actions of three people.

There's usually always at least some little kernel of truth to every stereotype. They wouldn't exist if that weren't the case.

The Ugly American is alive and well. My family and I will always experiment by speaking persian/farsi exclusively if we go out to eat at least once if we're traveling outside the country. The difference in service and treatment is night and day everywhere in the world, even in parts of Canada that have a lot of Americans passing through.

The Ugly American? Out in the big wide world - not so much anymore - but they are certainly alive & well in Florida.

For me, it is the tour bus hordes that are the most obnoxious of travelers. Any great site within an hour and a half of a cruise ship dock will be inundated with pushy, self-entitled crowds blindly following their tour leader & trampling anyone that gets in their way. American, German, Chinese, Russian . . . it doesn't seem to matter - they are all the same in packs.

I agree, I had almost posted that we can act like gleeful children but didn't want to offend anyone.

The Indians are doing a pretty bang up job as well.

It only takes a few rotten apples to spoil the whole lot. I think that azzhats can exist in any nationality. It is a long time since I have heard a loud American. How can I criticize the people of a country that came in to WW2 to help the allies save the world? A few loudmouths are no big deal.:)G.
