They have heard the pings, they have not found any airplane debris, really sad.

There has been so much dis-information until the plane is found they should stop saying anything.

Don't even get me started on CNN's "breaking news" of nothing other than speculation....

yea pretty sad. guess i am back on track. i dont think they will find it, and by that i mean the black box. they cant even find the debris that the satellites pick up.
not to put them down in ANY way. its a tough location, perhaps why they ditched the plane in that are.
i wonder why they dont get the support of an air craft carrier down there?
too far away?

one of the reasons i dont watch the news.

This is where the search for the Maylasian Airlines is focused. I can imagine the multitude of seasick sailors caoming that area right now.

THE ROARING FORTIES

The world’s largest hunt for a missing airliner has zeroed in on one of the most desolate corners of the planet, an area of ocean nearly two miles deep, swept by huge rolling swells and buffeted by strong winds known as the Roaring Forties,” begins a Post story on the extreme weather conditions in area some 1,500 miles southwest of Perth, Australia, where a satellite may have spotted debris.

The Roaring Forties refers to the belt of ripping westerly winds, aided by the Earth’s rotation, between roughly 40 and 50 degrees latitude in the southern hemisphere. Winds rage in this region as it sits in the transition zone between the more tranquil, balmy subtropics and frigid polar vortex zipping around the South Pole. Pressures and temperatures change rapidly here, driving the winds frequently over 30-40 mph, and give rise to storms.

Not the place you want to search for a missing aircraft.

Excellent post. I passed through the area on the way to Africa on board an Aust Navy ship during the mid 80s.
Everyone got sick going through that area. Most of the ship smelt like vomit, piss and poo mixed together. :(

Maybe it's a bit Tom Clancy-ish but if I could think of it, I'm sure the bad guys could too.

I'm not saying at all it'll happen, but it could. I'm sure your type would've dismissed the whole "hijack airplanes and use them as weapons" tactic as a nutty manifestation of paranoia too -up until about September 10, 2001.

There are an awful lot of crazy people in the world with vendettas, political agendas and scores to settle. Never underestimate how resourceful a truly motivated, crazy enemy can get.

and we are saying that no, they can't.

everything is serialized, and can be cross checked with maintenance and install records.

and to think I've griped about having to eat my two prime rib dinners on the bathroom floor of my window cabin on a cruise ship passing through the straight at the southern end of Cuba.

Q: Has there in recent years (say in the last 20), any large commercial civilian plane with advanced comm. and avionics completely lost without any trace or answer to what happened?

Sure they could, serialized components on aircraft are major or significant components, and I can think of very few that would float...all of the debris that these people are looking for are the soft goods from the aircraft such as seat cushions, passenger luggage and bits and pieces of trim etc. light enough to float.

Far from every part of an aircraft is serialized. And then you make the assumption that figuring out if that serial number is related to that aircraft is easy, far from it. True Boeing knows what it left the factory with, but after that you are piecing througt the records of the aircraft operators ( I don't know if this aircraft was delivered to Malaysian directly from Boeing) to see what has been changed. Human nature being what it is, the older the aircraft the more difficult the task.

Having said that, I cannot understand why every body is seeking some sort of sinister answer to what occured. There is not enough info out there to say this was intentional or anything else, better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt as the saying goes lol.

Question. Why would a pilot or a terrorist fly a perfectly good airplane towards the south pole until it ran out of fuel and hit the water? I don't get it. No publicity, no ransom demands, no leveraging their holdings to some end. Just fly it into the water? What are we missing here?

What if he made the demand to the Malaysians that his jailed political icon be released? Considering the way they have conducted themselves thus far, do you think they would release that information?

because it was an accident. it always was.

when we find a huge chunk of wing, or fuel tank, something like that, it will be pretty obvious that the aircraft without said piece would not be airworthy.

also, seeding the ocean with derbies from the aircraft after stealing it, this far out of everyone's way is practically impossible. one owuld have to have landed the aircraft, removed said large hunk, put it on a boat, sail it out to this random corner of the ocean, dump it, and run off, without anyone noticing. good luck with that.

its always been an accident, or possibly suicide. no conspiracy here.

Anything is possible at this point. Flight 990 went down under similar circumstances in 1999 with no clear reason for the 1st officer's actions and it just seems like a pretty ineffective terrorist ploy. Maybe they are using airplanes to collect their 72 virgins. I just don't get it.

When they find the plane, they could look at the bodies to determine if they died from the plane ascending to 45000 to suffocate everyone, inhalation of smoke, or impact with the water. Well, if they found it promptly. There's still stuff they would be able to tell from the plane when they find it I guess.

I watched a simulation of that and as the plane was going down and the pilot was trying to recover, it shook so violently that the engine fell off. Terrifying.

Not likely. A pilot doesn't fly 7hrs due south by accident. They know the routes and know what the stars look like out the window just like street signs and landmarks. If it headed south into no-mans land, it was a deliberate action.

How did it happen?

I was thinking the plane was hijacked - but somehow afterwards had an accident. Or the accident could have happened during the hijacking.

You're saying an accident.....but no hijacking?
