Why have they not dispatched a sub? I go to think with their sonar and toys they could find it faster.

It is a question of where to "look". Remember, passive acoustic ranges are measures in miles, even with very sophisticated sensors.

The search area has not been fully defined until, I hope, the last few days. Mowing the ocean with a sub is very ineffective.

The ships in the search are using towed array technologies, very effective, but just as limited in the passive role. The sensors are "listening"'. That is the key. Once they have an idea where the BB is, they can employ more active sensors.

Latest update--and oddity:

Malaysian authorities have just stated that a cell tower on the west coast of Malaysia picked up a roaming signal from the co-pilot's cell phone. It was the only phone to have been detected. Long ago, phone records showed no calls were sent or received from any phones on the plane, but this information indicates that, at least, the co-pilot's phone was on, over a half and hour after the transponder went dark and the plane made a left turn. It reaffirms the westward flight of the plane and the location of the INMARSAT signals.

Naturally, it raises more questions than it answers. Out of 239 phones, only one was turned on? Typically, nearly 30% of passengers forget to turn off their phones. Did the co-pilot just forget, or did he deliberately turn it on during the flight? That could be answered by checking phone towers around the airport while the plane was taxiing for take-off. Clearly, this new information is intriguing, but a lot more digging is needed to understand what it might mean.

With all due respect, I don't think you can have much confidence in what the Malaysians have to say. Why has it taken three and half weeks to discover this information?

. Hell in WW11 is was better then what they describe what is available now.

I'm surprised Malaysia even has a military radar. I bet it doesn't get much use...

There ALL kind of ships all over the world with radar..even if we want to assume Malaysia did not have any , ..which would be silly.
The USA can detect a missal launch from anywhere, This whole 777 thing is a emergency, but not what they are spinning it to be, thats is for sure.
I am a little but familiar with AWAX from 30 years ago...( I am sure it has improved a 1000 fold) ........all this not knowing is just silly jabber. I am so surprised that a real military retiree has not stepped up and said THIS IS ALL B.S.!!

These are not all the routes in the region, just the busiest. Billions of people live in this part of the world.
Now combine the number of aircraft in the air at one time in this general region with the lack of military threat and you might get a glimmering of the likelyhood of the shut down of transponders on one flight going unnoticed.
I can guess what you mean by "missal" the spelling is "Missile".
The first thing you might want to remember about "AWAX" is that it stands for Airborne Warning And Control. It is based upon a powerful airborne radar. Unless a major fleet was running war games in the area, I doubt there were any assets of that type present.
Sorry for being such a grouch, but the amount of "Monday morning quarterbacking" going on makes me wonder at the lack of appreciation for the magnitude of the problem.
